Well, with my Optacon, from what I've noticed, I can usually see a difference between the distance from a period at the end of a sentence and the letter preceding it, which is right up against the letter, and the first dot of an ellipsis and the letter preceding it, which is usually farther away; and that is usually the same distance as the final dot and the letter following it. Those differences in distance look like the difference between no space and a space to me. I can't think of any other way of accounting for them.

I have often seen the ellipses with no spaces around them on inside flaps and back covers of paperbacks. Things are generally more crowded there, but often with spaces around them in the text of a book.

I have no spaces.

Hey, Kim!

Not knocking your Braille read, but as a sighted reader, I have always seen an ellipsis with no space before and a space after.

To everyone else, are we to add spaces before and after ellipses for BookShare? I know with things like em-dash replacements, there are no spaces around double hyphens... how are ellipses to be handled in submissions?

Valerie, ever the learning student!

Hi, Debby, I like using it because at least I know how the Braille should
look. I have come across little things, for example, a word with an
ellipsis right next to it without a space and a second word connected to the
end of the ellipsis. I've read Braille for a long time and know that
ellipses should be by themselves with spaces separating them from
surrounding words. The scan I'm looking at is very clean. So far, there
aren't many errors. I did see a four word combination with hyphens except for the last word, so put in a hyphen because maybe the scanner didn't catch it. I listen to the text and follow along in Braille for the sake of double checking. When I come across something I should get rid of, I use the arrow keys on the computer to get me to the place and I'm looking at the Braille display with one hand until I'm at the spot then delete something or correct something. I'm trying not to mess with the scan or the spacing because I don't know how to deal with that yet. My feeling is if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I've been saving the changes I make every time I close the file, so hopefully when it is done, I can send this file to the check in point at
Bookshare. I think I'll ask questions of the submitter if I run into
difficulties, but so far things are okay. What's nice about this is while I'm proofreading the file, I'm reading the story. Yes, it's true, Debby, I'm reading every single solitary word. Thanks for your note. I enjoy hearing from you. I'm giving the computer a rest as it's almost 12:30 A.M. and I
want to finish my mystery magazine. Regards, Kim.

Hi Kim!

I'm proud of you for figuring out how to get your Braille Note to help you proof. Way to go! Is there an advantage to using a braille display while
proofing? I don't have one, so I depend entirely on speech.

Hi, Debby, what I understand is the submitter and proofreader can work
together as a team. I want to do just enough and not too much, i.e., I
don't want to mess up the submitter's work if I can help it. I was
getting a bit frustrated before I thought to leave the file on the
computer and both listen to and read the file in Braille. When I've
mastered the word processing stuff in my BrailleNote manual (yawn), and know how to get the BrailleNOte to recognize the file, I'll continue in
this way I've chosen.
Right now, I'm reading every word of the text (I want to know what
happens next). So I don't think I'll be one of those slam-bang jiffy
proofreaders that I understand are the despair of conscientious
submitters. I figure for now to proofread the sort of stuff I read
anyway. Last night I was definitely beginning to have fun because I was
progressing from helpless frustration to a mere glimmer of confidence.
I'm not at the stage of being "an old hand". I'll cheer you on and expect
you'll do the same for me.
Regards, Kim.

Hi Kim!

I hope you enjoy proofreading as much as I am. Just go through
carefully, and I know you'll do fine.

Hi, Debby, thanks for your comments. I appreciate making friends on
this list. Wish me well, for I'm going to try proofreading again and
hope it works out that every word is spelled right, every sentence
lacks nothing the author intended to write and I hope my job is good
enough that it ends up in the collection. Cross your fingers. Regards,
Kim.

Hi Kim!

Take your time when learning the scanning. There is no rush, and I
know you can do it. You express yourself well, so I agree with
whoever said it quite a few messages ago that you are sharp. Just a
little shaky
confidence now.
A few years ago, I tried OmniPage, and that OCR package baffled me,
so I know the feeling about something that is baffling.

Hi, Monica, again, thanks much for writing. I thank you also for
the compliment and I grant you I have my moments, but at other
times, I don't feel sharp at all. I'll let you know when I actually
do something or take the plunge into scanning. I'm not really
worried about crashing the computer and I know I haven't hurt the
scanner, but it's actually wanting to do it. Again, I don't think
there's any rush on this, as long as I eventually screw up my courage
and say:
"Okay, Friedman, there's something I want to scan and now is the
time for you to get off your rear end and do the thing." Take care,
best regards, happy reading, and if you wish to write me off list,
please do so. That way the list gurus won't get us into trouble. Kim
Friedman.

Kim, you can put your book or scanner in any position you like. I
have mine set up like yours with the lid at the back. Scanners come
in different sizes and shapes. Because of that, and because of our
computer desks, we all have slightly different set-ups. Kurzweil
will detect if pages are upside down or sideways. It's something I
really like about the program.

Just relax and try scanning something simple like a letter or a
page in a novel. You'll find that you learn so much by
experimenting. You can't hurt your scanner or crash your computer by
scanning something.
If it doesn't come out well, it just means that you need to adjust
your settings in Kurzweil. We can teach you how to do that. You can
do
this.
I can tell you're a sharp woman, and you're going to have fun once
you get
started.
