Hi, everyone! I've been trying to scan a book with my Cannon 1240 scanner. I
don't use this scanner very often, because it's so much slower than my Epson
1660. However, since it's so portable, and since it doesn't need to be plugged
into an electrical outlet, I thought it might be better for my current
situation.

When I try to scan with K1000 version 10 with the FineReader engine, it appears
to lock up the speech on my computer. This doesn't happen right away with
ScanSoft, but it happens every 50 pages or so. After checking the Freedom
Scientific Web site (they have a scanner performance page that gives some
decent feedback about scanners that work with OpenBook, so I figured they'd
work for K1000 in this instance), I found out that a dialog box pops up every
50 to 75 pages, telling you to re-calibrate the scanner. K1000 won't speak
this dialog, of course, and neither will Jaws. I don't know why pressing Enter
won't make the darn thing go away, but it doesn't seem to.

Has anyone experienced this? If so, is there a keystroke I can press that will
disable this dialog or get rid of it? I talked with Paul from Kurzweil
yesterday, and he had me to uninstall K1000, delete some folders from the K1000
directory, and then reinstall. I didn't know about the dialog at that point,
but I don't think this is his scanner of choice (understandably so, I must
say!), so he probably wouldn't have known how to get rid of it either. If all
else fails, I can always have someone to help me to go get my trusty Epson, but
I thought I'd ask here first. Thanks!

Jana
