Thank you very much for that kind explanation. I have released The Thirty-Six Hour Day back to step 1. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Claire O'Brien" <ClaireO@xxxxxxxxxxxx>

Hi Jamie,

The idea of putting "Hold For" in the title is born out of cooperation between volunteers. For example, if I am very interested in validating "Catcher in the Rye" but I don't have access to a scanner or a library, I could ask Carrie to scan it for me. She could get the book, scan it, and then submit it to step 1, with "Hold For Claire" in the title, so that I have the opportunity to validate it. This way other volunteers know that I've arranged with Carrie to validate this book, so they should leave it for me to pick up.

With the new policy of alerting validators 48 hours before a book is
released back to step 1, why should anyone need to have a book held on step
1? What happens if someone forgets to come back and pick the book back up
again? Won't it just languish on step 1 forever? Perhaps I'm missing
something, but that just doesn't seem quite right. I have wanted to read The
Thirty-Six Hour Day for years and was excited to find it on step 1. I will
certainly release it if Lena wants it back, but this looks like a bit of a
complication where validating is concerned. Please explain.

Hi Jamie,

Books listed on Step 1 will have "HOLD FOR..." in the title of the book
(much like when a book is intended to replace a copy, BSO is entered in the
title), so it is immediately obvious which books are intended for a certain
validator. For example, I just checked the current Step 1 page, and if you
look towards the bottom there is one title with HOLD FOR MONICA in the
preceding the rest of the title.

It sounds like in your situation, HOLD FOR was intended to be placed in the
title, but perhaps was forgotten. I've BCC'd Lena on this message, so if
that book was in fact intended for her, she will let you or I know, and we
can proceed from there.

The other day, I read with interest the thread on validators snapping up
books that were designated as being on hold by other validators. I was
puzzled by this because I'd never run across the situation before. Today,
irronically, I downloaded the book The 36-hour Day. I saw no indication that
the book was on hold until I unzipped the file. The title has the words
On_Hold_For_Lena in it. How do I know that the book is on hold before I
download it? Should I go ahead and work on it a while or release it back to
step one. Help please.
