Funny thing is that I have about 4 books that I know are publisher books, and there are no page numbers. We could put those in as there are page breaks if they went to the download list. Must be a rule about us not touching their ebooks. Frustrating. Anyhow, yes, when Carrie was a volunteer, she used to scan bunches of books and put them up for validation. I proofread a few of her science fiction submissions. I recall once back in I think late 2006 or early 2007, she put up a few dozen erotica books. You never saw books get checked out so fast in your life. <smile> Seriously, though, we need more scanners. It may be that some scanners have become discouraged because of publisher submissions. It's true that between publishers and outsourcers, a great many books are being added without volunteers. But it really doesn't take a lot of effort to find that there are still a large number of books that may not be added by publishers for a long time, if ever, or done by outsourcers. I just got a rather chunky new book from a well known SF author in the mail yesterday from a publisher that Bookshare doesn't have an agreement with that I've already started scanning. I recently added two new science fiction books from a small press that Bookshare almost certainly wouldn't have gotten otherwise. And even for publishers that Bookshare does get books from, it is worthwhile to look into their older books. Lissi and I will be shortly adding a book from Simon & Schuster that was published back in 1995. It's very unlikely that that will be sent in by the publisher. Certainly things have changed a bit. Back when I first joined, and for the first four years or so, finding books to scan was simpler. All you had to do was check the collection, and if the book wasn't there, you could get it and scan it. No need to check anything further. Those days are gone. Nevertheless, with just a bit of checking and care, lots of books, both old and new, can still be found to scan. Evan Roger Loran Bailey wrote: I came on board in 2008. I have not seen this, but I have been told that at one time before I started volunteering books were scanned at the Bookshare offices and then added to the checkout list for volunteers to proofread. Well, it was called validate back then and considering some of the early books I have downloaded and read I don't think there was any real proofreading. The book I am reading right now is an example. It is The Exiles Trilogy by Ben Bova and it was added in 2002 and it appears to be a raw scan. It is full of scanning errors and the page headers are still there. I am digressing though. I meant to say that the scans were added to the checkout list for volunteers and as long as I have been volunteering I have not seen that happen. Are all the books scanned at the Bookshare office now sent to outsourcers exclusively? I ask because there is a dearth of books on the checkout list now. If any time would be a good one for Bookshare to add its own scans this would be a good time. Something else occurs to me. When one of those older books in fair or good condition is reported with a quality report Bookshare rescans it and replaces it. Wouldn't it be better to just dump the good quality ones on the checkout list for repair? That one I am reading now really only needs a good and thorough proofreading. It is already readable, but there are numerous scanning errors to be corrected and the page headers need to be removed. However, I have made a quality report on it and Bookshare informs me that it will be rescanned and replaced. I would not suggest, though, placing the fair quality books on the checkout list. Those are beyond proofreading help. They all need to be rescanned. It does seem to me , though that some of these suggestions could provide more for volunteers to work on. I hope that's all right. The first book that I have available is Ten Beach Road by Wendy Wax. Here is the text from the back cover: [From The Back Cover] On the brink of ruin, three very different women discover themselves where they least expect ... at Ten Beach Road . Madeline, Avery, and Nikki are strangers to one another, but they have one thing in common. They each wake up one morning to discover that their life savings have vanished, along with their trusted financial manager ... leaving them with nothing but co-ownership of a ramshackle beachfront house. Madeline Singer is a homemaker coping with empty-nest syndrome and an unemployed husband. Avery Lawford is an architect--or was, until she somehow became the sidekick on her ex-husband's TV show. And professional matchmaker Nikki Grant is trying to recover from her biggest mistake ... No one is going to save them but themselves. Determined to fight back, they throw their lots in together and take on the challenge of restoring the historic beach house to its former glory. But just as they begin to reinvent themselves and discover the power of friendship, their secrets threaten to tear down their trust, and destroy their lives a second time ... Meeting a single, straight, reasonably attractive, willing-to-commit man? Or Discovering a secret cache of magic books? For good girl Jane Madison, neither has a shot in hell of coming true--until the day she finds a hidden room... Now she's done a bit of experimenting and found a spell that makes her irresistible to men-... more ≫even those who have previously ignored her. And another that turns a cat into her witch's familiar (a snarky, critical, self-absorbed man--pretty much a typical male). Though her impulsive acts of magic have brought a warder (sexy, grouchy, elusive and determined to stop her from using magic) down on her, Jane's not willing to let go of this fantastic new life. Though she wonders about having things that aren't "real," she's having too much fun to stop. After all, no one ever said being a witch was easy... --- If either of you is interested in proofreading either of these books, I'll happily put a hold on the book you'd like to proofread for you when I submit the book, which will be almost as soon as you say you're interested in proofreading it. I hope each of you will find a book that is to your liking! Thanks in any case for the offers to proofread the books! If you encounter any book with that designation, please don't download it, and notify Carrie at ckarnos@xxxxxxxxx and let her know that the book is on the check out page by mistake. Those books labeled PRIORITY are books that have already been proofread by outsourcers and which have mistakenly ended up on the check out page, rather than in the approval queue. And, Reggie, I will have a few books available for proofreading very soon. All formatting has been done. What remains needing to be done is to read the books through, and to make sure that paragraph marks between dialogue are where they should be. This is what I mean. "I don't want to go to Grandma's house," Max whined. "Why?" his mother asked. As I have written the above, there are two lines of dialogue which have been put together as one. What needs to happen here is for a paragraph mark, (carriage return) to be inserted before the word "Why?" In the books I'd like proofreaders for, the final thing needed will be a final spell check after reading the books. I have one erotica book, one romance/fiction, one fiction, and one teen fiction book that will need a bit more care taken with it. Are you interested in any of these? I can give titles and authors if you prefer later. Sorry for the ramble! Mayrie All heading navigation and font stuff is done. I would like anything on animals, history, fiction, romance, mystery and thrillers, nonfiction biography or events. All that is on without a hold is religion. Alternatively, is there anyone who would let me have one of their holds? Another problem. I downloaded what I think is a textbook Priority TX Health and Wellness. I tried to make it into a .doc file, which I normally do as I have Word 2003 and it will not open in my BN. When I opened it on the BN it gave me a message stating “Ipad converter does not recognize this as a word 2007.” I think it was scanned on a later Word. Can someone pick it up and proof? It looks like it was priority. I intended to spend tonight and tomorrow proofing. Instead I had to download something about shells Shelley scanned. Hoping it has pic descriptions as I wonder if it is one of the books that people are working on for descriptions. I cannot help with this. If it is not described and was only let go back to download because of this, can someone let me know, please before I get too far. Appreciate much! Reggie Thanks for any help anyone can give me on any of these problems.
