If by basic search you mean the simple search form found on the home page, that does not default to all languages. Right now the total number of books in the collection mentioned on the home page is
158,443. However, if you click the search button on that same page without filling anything in the search field you get 152,281 results. The difference would be the number of books in languages other than American English. That has been one of my complaints about the search feature. British English and American English are treated as different languages. It makes some sense to exclude certain languages from the search and require that you specify the language if you want to search in it. There is no point in searching Bengali, for example, if you do not read Bengali, but anyone who can read either American or British English should have no problem reading the other. Nevertheless, if you want to search all English language books you have to do your search and then do the search again specifying British English. I would much prefer that both American and British English be lumped together in the search engine.
