Hi Tim, You are exactly right. No need to bracket the asterisks and the footnote numbers that are in the text. Thanks for asking! I have been putting both the asterisks and the footnotes in square brackets. Then there are also footnote numbers in the text which refer to an appendix at the back of the book where they are listed. I have also put those numbers in square brackets. If that is confusing, the book title is "Not In His Image" by John Lamb Bush. If I understand things correctly, I should remove the brackets from the asterisks and numbered footnotes in the text and use spaces before and after. Right? Yes, please put a space between the footnote number and the text, whether it is superscript or not. When the footnote is placed in square brackets, we only ask that people include the number, a period after the number, and the footnote text, so your second example is perfect. The word “footnote” is not necessary. I also realized another potential type of footnote that people may encounter: if anyone comes across a book that only has one or two footnotes and the author has inserted asterisks (and no numbers), please put the footnote information in square brackets. In this case, include an asterisk before the footnote information (because there is no number), but no period after it. I hope I’m not making things even more confusing! Best, Madeleine
