Nancy, Two other factors might have contributed to the missing page numbers; one is that the submitter may have been transferring them from the bottom to the top of the page and simply neglected to do this a few times; I know I have been guilty of that. Thanks, Mayrie.  I took your suggestion and went to Amazon to see how many
pages the print book is supposed to have.  The numbers match exactly to my
file.

That being said, it seems vaguely possible that there was an error in the
printing and page numbers were skipped.  Many books are published with
typos.  I see complaints about this in reviews all the time.

Thanks for your advice.  I'll keep all of your suggestions in mind for the
future.

And you expressed yourself just fine without coffee!

Hi Nancy,

So, what you're saying is that pages are not left unnumbered, but that in
the consecutive numbering, with no pages left unnumbered, the numbers are as you describe, 1, 2, 4, etc? If so, I'd look up the ISBN on Amazon or Barnes 
and Noble.  In the product details for the book will be a statement of the
number of pages in the book.  I have found that the number of pages listed
includes all front and back matter. So, a book with 250 numbered pages, and 
6 unnumbered preliminary pages would be listed as a book having 256 pages.
If your page count is accurate after you renumber pages without skipping
numbers, I think you're good to go.
Here's another possibility. In your example of pages 1 2 4, pages 2 and 3 
could have been perceived by the OCR as only one page.  Is there more text
on page 2 than on page 1 or four? If so, this may be your problem? Again, check Amazon or Barnes and noble and see what they think. And maybe contact 
the submitter of the book so that maybe he/she can help?
Just some random thoughts that I'm hoping might help, but am afraid might be 
not well-written due to my still unfilled need for coffee.

I have a book that has missing page numbers, but not missing pages.

It's possible that the original book was misnumbered in spots, but I'm not
certain.  Should I retain the page numbers as written?

For instance, you'll see page 1, 2, and then 4 ... then the numbering is
fine until you see 22, and it skips 23, then resumes proper numbering. Then it skips page 30. Now I'm up through 80, and all the other page numbers are 
there.

When a page number is skipped, it does not appear that content is skipped,
more like someone just skipped a number.
