Hi Scott:I never close the scanner lid because with it open I can hold down the book. As far as library books, the ones I've gotten the bindings were pretty beat up and so I didn't have to put much pressure on them.

Hey Katie,I'm not too surprised about the superior text quality in the hc books. However, I've scanned exclusively paperback since beginning my volunteer time for Bookshare, and on only two or three occasions has subpar text quality affected my scans. As a general rule, using Openbook, I get a nearly flawless scan without adjusting any settings, other than increasing the dots per inch setting to 400. This holds true for both trade paperbacks as well as the mass market releases, and also a wide range of books from both large and small publishers. I also don't use library books because I really traumatize the spines of the books I buy, thus eliminating the need to press down on the book. I can literally place a book flat on the scanner, and because of my ministrations with the spine, I don't even have to close the scanner ... the book will still be snug enough against the glass to provide a near-perfect scan.Scott----- Original Message ----- From: "Katie Hill" <kaitlyn@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, May 05, 2007 5:56 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Wet, Greencandidate for ScottHi Scott, That is interesting, I am getting a lot of books from the library these days, I tend to like a good hard cover. The text quality appears to be better in them than paper backs. Huggles, Katie Katie Hill You can learn a lot if you are humble enough to listen. I am going to take myself out of the mix for thisparticular book though, as I has somewhat of a back log of books to wade through. I'm also not a fan of hardcover books, just one of my several finicky tendencies when it comes to scanning for Bookshare. If there are no takers on the Epperson book, you could always ship it off toBookshare. I don't remember who's doing what, especially if they are focusing on acategory that doesn't interest me. Back to my Find. The book is Green Lakeby S. K. Epperson, copyright 1996, a hardcover book in excellent condition, 263 pages. and if you have it already or aren't interested in it, it's all right because it didn't cost much. It may not be horrible enough, but horror was mentioned in the book's description below..A suddenly widowed and penniless woman is forced to move into her sister'svacation cabin on Green Lake. But instead of quiet and solitude, she findsherself immersed in a world of depravity, blackmail and-ultimately-murder.And what should she think of the tall and taciturn native American who lives next door? From one of the most sophisticated novelists utilizing the explosive mating of the terrifying and the deceptively prosaic, comes the hair-raising story of a most unlikely couple to find themselves dangerously alone in an alien world. Epperson has shown a talent for nonsupernatural horror that is involvingand often psychologically insightful...original and convincing...Epperson mixes horror and thriller elements-with dashes of realistic romance-into agripping eclectic read.If you, or anyone else is interested in scanning, Green Lake, I'll mail itto you. Contact me at airadil@xxxxxxxxxxxxxIt was a productive browsing day. I found several books we don't have yet, some mysteries, some sweet stuff, humor, and a big, thick book about Henry's oldest daughter, "Bloody Mary," for the many of you I know who can't get enough of that period in English history.
