Dear Lissi, it's such a pleasure hearing from you. One thing I can say about your message is that I learned something I didn't know before. I'm happy to say I'm less stumped than I was due to my keeping the file I downloaded untouched except for making a copy of it to use for proofreading purposes. Fortunately for me, even though my working copy doesn't seem to have the page numbers in it (or if they're there, I can't see or hear about them), the original file does have them so I can shuttle between files using the original file to refer to. All the prefatory pagination is satisfactory and I'm now proofreading the actual file. What a relief! Once I found out what to do about this, it's clear sailing unless I come across a scanno I can't decipher (so far everything's going along swimmingly). Take care and best regards, Kim. _____ From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Estelnalissi Sent: Sunday, June 13, 2010 10:47 AM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: stumped Dear Kim, If jaws is actually saying the words "page field" before the 5, then I'm not sure what's going on. If there's just a 5 after the name of the book or author's name, the 5 could be what the scanner is calling a decorative swirl at the end of each header. Often books put curvy lines before and after page numbers or headers which the scanner tries to turn into text. All I can suggest without seeing the book or some sample pages, is that you delete the fives and extra words and fill in pages consecutively, and hope more correct page numbers turn up to reassure you that you're on track. I hope you get some more helpful answers. Good luck. Here's the thing that has me stumped. I'm told by my screen reader (I'm proofing this in Microsoft Word 2003 in case you're curious) that I'm on p. 12. Now comes the weird part. I start reading the next page and there's a header which I have to strip, then each page says "(header consisting either of book title or author's name) "page field 5". What is this all about? Not every page can be number 5. Please help me out as I'm not sure what to do about this one. I'm used to seeing page numbers that change arithmetically by one digit, not staying the same number. This is weird. Regards, an extremely puzzled Kim Friedman. P.S.: Is this a formatting issue?
