Hi, For more about the Kaddish and the beauty of the various customs surrounding its reciting you can see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mourner%27s_Kaddish It is a topic especially dear to me today on what would have been my beloved mother's birthday. One of my favorite customs surrounding its reciting in many reformed congregations is the custom which has become popular in the wake of the holocaust of the entire congregation standing for its chanting not just those who are designated as mourners. this is done partly so that those who might have perished in the holocaust and hadn't any surviving family members to chant it for them will be remembered but also in more recent times so that no one in the congregation should stand alone during their time of mourning no matter how long that pain is freshly felt. I find that very comforting. Ann's right in stating that it doesn't specifically mention death in its text but rather is a prayer of remembrance and declaration of life. My condolences to Bob and his wife on their unimaginable loss. Were there anything I could do to lighten their burdens as they travel along the way of lament and the road of the bereaved I surely would. Blessings to all you love in this world. I thought I'd sent it directly to Bob Tweedy. Sorry, folks, but thanks to Ann for looking it up. Ann inspired me to look it up, too. I found more than enough information about kaddishes, the complete one, a mourner's kaddish, a rabbi's kaddish, but not the phrase I remember, even when I put it in google in quotation marks. Maybe it's just something our rabbi added. However, it's become a very popular phrase, whatever its origin; when I googled the phrase I found it in obituaries, books people sign at funerals, and many other places. I'm not very religious and haven't been to services in many years but that phrase I do remember as ending a prayer said at the end of a service on the high holidays remembering those who have passed. Ann, if your friend Else gives you more information, please send it to me off-list. Thanks. Join us in celebrating our 10th Anniversary! An English Translation Glorified and sanctified be God's great name throughout the world which He has created according to His will. May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime and during your days, and within the life of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon; and say, Amen. May His great name be blessed forever and to all eternity. Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored, adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He, beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen. May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen. He who creates peace in His celestial heights, may He create peace for us and for all Israel; and say, Amen. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It's a beautiful prayer. I didn't know its translation till now. I think there must be more too it though because it doesn't mention those who are gone at all. Hmmm, interesting. I'll have to ask my friend Elise sometime when we're sitting and talking. Have a great day. Ann P. -- Ann K.
