Hello, all. I just submitted The Player of Games by Iain M. Banks. Looks like a fairly clean scan to me.

Happy validating.

Synopsis
He was one of the greatest game-players the Culture has ever produced--respected and rarely beaten, Gurgeh is successful at almost everything he attempts. Nevertheless, feeling unfulfilled, he becomes restless and asks Contact--the Culture organization whose job it is to find, investigate, analyze, and occasionally interfere in other civilizations--to find something that might challenge him. What they offer him is the Empire of Azad, a civilization of immense wealth and appalling cruelty, a hundred thousand light-years away from home and everything he knows. Here, there exists a game so complex and so closely modeled on the rules of existence the winner becomes Emperor. Under the threat of blackmail, and with no real choice, Gurgeh accepts the challenge and sets off on a year-long journey to a strange land where the ultimate game becomes one he knows he cannot win. Like Consider Phlebas, Iain M. Banks' first science fiction novel, The Player of Games teems with exotic landscapes and vivid characters. It is a classic science fiction novel, complex, inventive, and thrilling.
