I realize you may simply have used arrowing up and down to explain how JAWS
was working, but I want to make sure that you know how to read
continuously. Insert-DownArrow is the command to make JAWS read an entire
document or until you stop it. Control is usually the best key to use for
stopping JAWS's reading, although just about any key will work. You won't
necessarily know where lines end, but that won't matter since we already
know you will hear split words that you might want to fix. :-) If you have
any problems with JAWS reading jirkily or some other problem let us try to
help.
For clarification the directions you were given to switch to "normal"
should have said something like "normal view" instead of "normal window".
A window being refered to as normal is a size issue, and although that
usually works fine it is sometimes best to have the window maximized. You
can maximize a window you are working in by pressing alt-SpaceBar and then
arrowing down to maximize or just pressing the letter X. The "normal"
refered to as a solution to your problem is a view option specific to
Microsoft Word and certainly is the best choice for displaying a document
you are editing.
I wanted to write and offer my help when you wrote a message asking for
someone to teach you how to validate, but I didn't dare offer because i
haven't been well enough or energetic enough to be able to commit to the
time that would probably involve. I'm willing to answer questions when I
can, though. Just remember that I'm of practically no use in assisting
with Open Book, so I couldn't do the hole job of teaching you to process
books for bookshare. It would be useful if you could get someone to help
you with Open Book, because then you could scan books for yourself and you
could do the validation on some of the books awaiting validation by someone
who can deal with the ARC format created by Open Book.

Dear Gerald, and Volunteers,
Thank you for giving your attention to my question. I'm sorry I didn't tell you the whole story. I'm afraid part of the problem is that I don't really understand what I'm using. I'll list what I do know and maybe you can tell me what more I need to find out.
Jaws - six point o
Windows XP
Office 2003
When I downloaded the book for Validation, I put it in a folder in my documents called Validation in progress. The file was called RTF Maybe when I named it, I should have put some kind of file extension after the title, but I wouldn't know what it should be.
I know I have something called notepad.
I also have Open Book seven point o.which I really don't know how to use
The book is The Orphan Game and I think Carrie scanned it.
When I tab between programs I have open, Jaws identifies the file as The Orphan Game A novel f1rtf Microsoft word. I'm not sure if it was Microsoft word before I entered normal using Sharon's instructions.
Anything you can tell me about which parts of this information are pertinent or anything else I should know will be appreciated.
Thank you,
Always With Love,
Lissi
The Book I chose was fairly generic,

Lissi,
It's hard to help when you didn't give us any information to work with. All
you told us is that you're using JAWS.
For example, You didn't mention the version of JAWS or the name of the
software you're using to edit the file. I think you may have mentioned them
in a recent message, but I don't remember what you have off the top of my
head.
We'll be glad to help, but we need a little more information first.
Gerald

Dear Volunteers,
I've finally unzipped a book to validate from the step one page. It was in
RTF. I began reading it line by line with the up and down arrows, which
worked as it usually does, but when I used the left and right arrows to
attempt to edit, jaws just said blank. Does anyone have any ideas about
this?
Thanks,
Lissi
