I Don't think it's required; -but indices are very useful in nonfiction books. As a sighted reader I I use them all the time.. However, as a proofer I don't proofread them. I'd say to scan them but don't necessarily proof them before submitting them. I've considered it as a proofreader, but a "find" will find he desired word in the index and the page on which it appears in the book. I don't prroof bibliographies carefully, either.
