As a matter of fact, I have come across a few duplicates myself. I just
left them, thinking that readers might for some reason or another want one
rather than the other and if both were there it would give them a choice.
However, might there be a good reason to have only one copy of each title in the
collection?

You're probably right about that. It really wouldn't be a bad thing to

Some people were getting upset when the books on which they had spent time
were replaced by publisher quality books, so maybe bookshare decided to
leave them, and that is why there are so many duplicates. Just my
speculation.

That's a very good question. I'm finding more and more duplicate books in
the collection. One is usually a publisher quality copy and the other is a
copy submitted by a volunteer.
