Bravo, Ann! I agree with you. Gwen, I hope you don't give up on your scanning for Bookshare just because your enthusiasm and love for what you do is marvelous. I'm thinking if that person who emailed you could have said: "Gwen, I'm reading page number such-and-such and this is what I see. Can you tell me about such-and-such, or I am missing some text on line number such-and-such." Now that would be something you could deal with. Blanket generalizations do not help anybody, especially when they're starting out. I'm sort of in the same boat from the proofreading end, in that I need to learn how to go about it and definitely could use all the help I can get. So I hope you won't let some person who has given snarky and unhelpful comments to you discourage you from proceeding in doing what you wish to do. You wish to provide a service, namely, adding books to the collection, and for my money, I say you should be cheered on and given specific advice that will make you understand you are a competent person who can scan well. I'm no where near where you are, and I'll bet you some day, people will be asking you for advice. It could happen, you know. Regards, and hoping for the best for us, Kim. -----Original Message----- From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Ann Parsons Sent: Sunday, November 01, 2009 5:44 PM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: I was told the following books are garbage scrap them please Hi all, Gwen, stop! Quit apologizing! We all know the person who sent you that letter made a mistake and was less than complimentary. Her ill-advised missive and the grief it caused only hurts her, not you. Tough Love is a good thing but there's a difference between Tough Love and out-and-out belittling. If we want to read and proof your scans, then let us do so, eh? If we think they're in need of improvement we'll tell you. <grrrr> I don't know who it was that coined that stupid phrase about "words can never hurt me.", but they were wrong. Words can build up or tear down. They can give life and hope, or they can deal death and despair. Shoot, if a word can create light then what makes us think that our own words have no power? Why do you all think I'm so ready to apologize when my words cause damage? It's because I know that I've used them to harm and not to heal. I own my words, therefore, I'm responsible for them. If I cause damage with them, then it is up to me, and only me, to repair that damage. Ann P. -- Ann K.
