Hi all,

Nimit, I'm not sure if the place markers are contributing to the page break
issue because I don't use place markers in Word. I haven't been able to
determine exactly what causes JAWS to stop identifying page breaks. I just know
that reboots usually fix it. If you like place markers and they usually work
for you then I'd try them again with the next book.

Personally, instead of JAWS place markers I tend to use my own place marking
word. That's my own technique that I invented for myself. It may or may not
work for others. What I do is I type a word into my file at the place where I
leave off. In order for this technique to work, my word has to be something
that won't appear anywhere else in the file. Personally, I use my last name and
first initial - hillikera. I'm 99% sure that will never turn up in a book that
I'm proofing so it feels safe to use. For you you'll probably want to pick a
different word, but it's up to you what that word would be. I'd just make sure
whatever word you use is unique. I recommend a variation on your name like I
do. Anyway, I type this word in when I'm taking a break from proofing. I save
the document with that word in it right at the place where I stopped proofing.
When I next open the file, I do a JAWS find with control f and search for that
word - hillikera. When I find it, I will then know where I last left off
proofing in that file. I then immediately delete my word. This is because I
don't want that bookmark word to be in the file because it's not a part of the
copyrighted text. I simply insert that word as a place marker in order to find
my place when I resume proofreading. That may or may not work for others, but I
thought I'd mention it because the subject of place markers came up. Please
keep in mind that if you think you're the type of person who may forget to
delete your place marker word then I wouldn't recommend this technique.

Larry, I saw your message that said that you weren't able to read my message
with JAWS. I'm not sure why that was because Nimit and I both use JAWS 14 and
were able to read it okay. Can you let me know if you're able to read this one?

HTH,
Allison

Hello Alison,
Thank you for getting back to me. I tried to restart my computer and reopened
the document. Now, the funny thing is, that Jaws announced the page breaks but
when I did alt+windows+K to go back to my placemark I made by
control+windows+K, it disappeared on me again and stopped announcing it. I
guess I should stop putting placemarks?
Maybe? That's strange. I put placemarks on the books I proof to avoid
remembering where I left off and when I do control+windows+K, jaws announces,
"Marking place" and when i do alt+windows+K, Jaws announces, the text where the
placemark should be and in my case, it's the page number. Well, note, if
somebody is using an earlier version of jaws, the keystrokes for marking place
is still the same,
contrlcontrol+windows+K but to go back to the placemark is, windows+K.
The freedom scientific jaws people changed it in the 14 release.
Just some F Y I! Alison, anything else do you think I should do? I guess I
should stop putting placemarks, but it is fine in my other books, but this one.
 I don't know. mystery!! Thanks!
