You're welcome. You did an excellent job with the scan. I don't think I made any corrections except on the submission form. Keep up the excellent work.

Sometimes when the mood strikes me, I look for books that have been kicked back and try to resolve the issue so that they won't linger forever on step 1.

Hi, grace, and thanks for doing it. It's so odd how it got changed to Kathy
like that! Actually, when I fill out a field, I rarely ever type the
information. I copy and paste to make sure I don't do something like that,
and I do that with every field, even the copyright, so I don't mess
something up. It's really odd! Anyway, thanks for doing it. Take care.

Hi Julie:

Actually it was. *smile* That's why it took some time to get approved. I
believe it got kicked back 3 times because essentially the author was
incorrect. You said that your subscription was expiring, and I vaguely
remembered you posting that you submitted it so I validated it for you. I
couldn't figure out why the author was written as Cathy when the book
clearly said Cathryn.

I always look at a book's history in case there are questions that need to
be answered.

Hi, grace. That wouldn't have happened to have been THE UNKNOWN TWIN, was
it? I noticed that in the admin cue and couldn't believe it, because the
author was Kathryn Shay, but the admin cue said Kathy. I know I didn't put
that in there, so I was wondering if maybe another validator before you
had
changed it? I was wondering why it was taking so long for that book to be
approved and that would definitely explain it. I make a habit of rereading
every field after I enter the information so things like that don't
happen,
so I thought that was really strange. Take care.

I am pretty sure that your surmise is correct.
Sometimes people do put in incorrect information on the submission form.
For
instance, I recently validated a book in which the author was Cathryn but
the submission form said Cathy, and the book clearly stated that "Cathryn"
was the author and copy right holder.

I just checked, and it hasn't come back yet. But if it does, I will do as
you advise. I did enter in the comments field when I uploaded the book
this morning that the title and copyright information was correct, but I
did not actually paste the information into the field. Maybe that will be
good enough, but if not, I will do it when it comes back.

My problem is not that this information needs to be accurate, or that it
may have been returned because of uncertainty about the accuracy of the
information. My problem is really with the uninformative nature of the
reason given for the return - especially the second time. The first
time,
I can understand that. But after someone else looked at it and sent it
back up, it might have occurred to him that a little clearer
communication
might be a good idea since the book still had the same problem after two
validations. That's my biggest problem. I'm still only guessing that it
has something to do with the fact that the author's name and the
copyright
holder's name don't precisely match; but I can't know because I don't
have
the information to know that, and it would have been a quick and simple
matter to provide it.

Evan:

In Admin's defense, , they have no way of knowing that you did verify it
with a print copy. In the future you can indicate this in the comments
field. As a matter of fact, don't be surprised if the book comes back
again since the question was not answered. If I were you I'd check the
download page to see if the book was back again. ----- This is a legal issue and bookshare has to be sure this information is
accurate.

I have validated a few hundred books and so have a good idea what is
required. And still occasionally 1 of my books get kicked back. So don't
be discouraged.

All you have to do is indicate in the comments field who is the
copyright
holder and tell them that you verified with a print copy. I would also
paste the title, copyright date and holder in the comments field.

Yes, the title is complete. I bought a copy of the book online, and I
know it is complete. The copyright information is in the book, which
is
identical to that on the form. Verifying the copyright information
with
that .gov site at least is impossible, as their records are incomplete,
and several months behind besides as they say right there. But since I
own a copy and can readily read the copyright information, I saw no
need
to verify it. If he had a problem with the author's name and the
copyright holder's name not matching, then .... Well, I've already
covered that.

Was the title complete? There's been times that books get kicked back
because the title is incomplete. I usually double check it with Bn.com
or Amazon.com to be sure that the information is correct. And when I
do
this I let the admin know in the comments field that I
verified it with these sources.
In your case I would have double checked online, explained my findings
on the comments field and pasted the copyright info on the comments
field.

There's a tip on Jake's site on verifying copyright information.

Hope this helps.

As far as the copyright information and the author information not
jibing goes, the author is Kate Elliott, and the copyright holder is
Katrina Elliott. Maybe that's what set him off, but it is correct on
the form and in the book. This is book six in the series, and all
five previous books are by Kate Elliott, copyright Katrina Elliott.

But if the book was kicked back once, and Ginny validated it and sent
it back up, why was it kicked back a second time. This is the most
irritating part of this thing. If Gustavo had just taken one minute
to write a simple sentence - at least the second time - giving just a
tiny bit more information, a lot of time and bandwidth could have
been
put to better use. If the fact that the author's name and the
copyright holder's name didn't exactly match is what bothered him,
then why didn't he just say so. If it's another issue, then why
didn't he say what it was, especially after kicking it back for a
second time? I'm going to keep on asking this question until I get
an
answer. It really bugs me.

When it gets kicked back with a comment about
something needs to be checked, it's administrative
staff, even though Gustavo's name isn't on it. Ginny
probably was a volunteer to worked on it at one time
and released it.

What happens is this, although maybe you've already
figured it out from all the responses:

After you validate a book and upload it, it gets
checked by a bookshare employee, usually Gustavo at
this time. He doesn't look at the book itself--just at
the form, so if, originally, the copyright holder's
name was not in the space in the submission form, or
if, perhaps, it didn't jibe with the author's name
(since in this case the translator holds the
copyright)and so looked suspicious to Gustavo or
someone, it would be kicked back with a note to have
it checked. Unfortunately, so far bookshare hasn't
replaced any former employees who helped in the
checking and so books get backlogged in the
admdinistrator queue.

Also unfortunately, the copyright law and liability
problems prevent any of us volunteers being able to
help with the checking, which would be really easy and
would unblock the clogged queue.

It's a good thing you happened to notice that your
book was back on the download list. Many of us haven't
been, assuming all is well, and while we wait for our
book to be approved, and we don't know it's back on
the list for some minor problem to be solved, someone
else takes it and validates it anew and uploads it
correctly.

The glitch, as I think Jake pointed out, is that the
original is the book that is returned, not the
validated copy, so instead of someone other than the
validator, who notices the book and sees what's
required, being able to download it and put in the
missing information and uploading it, that person has
to do a whole new validation. That's why, as Jake
said, I and others have started to keep out validated
copies so we can just upload them and correct the
form.

I hope I haven't further confused you and that my
explanation is clear and is not duplicative. I tend to
talk and write too much sometimes.

Cindy
