Chuckle. The only problem with what you say, Marlyn, is that if the validator
were like you those errors wouldn't exist or be reason for the book to be
returned.

I suspect the Hold will be (1) either for submitter, if it's something Carrie
thinks the submitter can fix easily because he/she has or can get the book,
e.g., like Sue's blank page or missing copyright info or misspelling of
author's name or book title; or (2) validator because of something like junk or
the form filled out incorrectly; e.g., I've seen forms where the publisher is
listed as the copyright holder when in the particular case it should be the
author; the initial error was the submitter's, but sometimes the validator
doesn't check the info the submitter put on the form to correct it; or (3)
both. In that case, if the submitter feels that the errors are ones that the
validator should have fixed, he/she can let the validator fix them. If the book
doesn't get fixed in a timely matter, he/she can ask Carrie or whoever to
please contact the validator again or take off the hold for and let another
validator fix the book and get credit for it.

Now to your message. If I were your validator in this case, and I got
the book returned to step 1 "Hold for V/S," I would very quickly look
and find out if I could fix the errors shown. If I could, then I
would, gladly
and quickly. I would only hope I got the first shot, ahead of the
submitter.
If it was, in your example, "a few little things," or in Mayrie's

example,
a few wayward pieces of gibberish, I should have caught them in the
first place -- because that's what I do, I validate, I proofread is
what I
tell my family and friends because who understands "validate"?

If a scanning person doesn't scan well, their work gets rejected. If a
proofreading person doesn't proofread well, it seems only fair that
their work gets rejected, too. In their proofreading process, they had
the opportunity to get help from the scanner and should have. That's
what I do, that's what I see other people on the list do, there's
nothing
wrong or illegal about it. Lots of scanning people even encourage it!

I've just convinced myself that there's no reason for any book to be
returned to the submitter. Gosh, I'm easy...
