I've seen it often, where chapters end in the middle of the page, and a new 
chapter starts on the same page right below the previous chapter's ending,
but I
can't recall ever seeing a table of contents ending and chapter 1 beginning

the same page.

In many print books, such as the book I'm validating
now, chapters do begin in the middle of the page,
though I don't see any logical reason for it. I also
don't see a reason why chapters have to begin on an
odd-numbered, or right-hand (facing the reader) page,
requiring a blank page preceding it. This is as
annoying to the sighted reader as it probably is to a
blind reader--and a waste of paper.

  Okay, this is pretty strange.

  As I said in a previous message I was using
k1000v10. Others with other software or other
versions of Kurzweil may find different results.

  I downloaded the daisy copy of "the rise and fall
of the third Reich" and opened it in Kurzweil.

  There are random page numbers that do show in the
book, page VII for example. However, most are
missing. But, Kurzweil is true to the book if you
make allowances for the extra page that bookshare
adds in on page two. For example, page 1524 in the
book was reported on page 1525. So, to find out what
page you are on press shift f1 in the book and
mentally add the number 1 to whatever k1000 reports
you are on.

  I checked out header avoidance in the reading
settings, making sure that header avoidance was
enabled. According to the manual, this should report
page headings, but it doesn't.

  I swear the page numbers were there when the book
was submitted to the bookshare administration. I can
only conclude that the stripper took them out, or
Kurzweil isn't reporting them.

  I am going to save the book in .txt format, open
it with a good old text editor and see if page
numbers and, I hope, page breaks are there. But,
don't hold your breath. I'll report it if there is
any difference.

      If you get the Daisy version, you can see the
page numbers in the Daisy tags using the Bookmark
list commands. Otherwise, you can use a notetaker or
bookport or book courrier if you have one, or, if
you need to, you can use Internet Explorer to read
the html version included with the Daisy version.
Use the Jaws placemarker commands to make bookmarks
or save your place, or convert the file back to txt
with Explorer and put it back in Kurzweil.
