I also use an Optacon, and I wouldn't consider submitting or validating without it. If it breaks and I can't get another one, I'll quit.
I never was able to figure out handwriting, though. I write my own checks and check them with the Optacon, but in that case, I am printing and I know what I've written ahead of time.

G. Cindy: Although I'm blind, I use a device called an optacon, which actually makes the image of the letter on my fingertip & I can therefore often figure out weird fonts, etc. where a scanner can't. I've even used it to read handwriting (not something the inventors recommended, but, o, well). My problem, of course, is getting to the library to get 1 of the books. That & I'm designing my church's website which needs to be up by Tuesday, web design is not my forte, & I'm starting a sunday school class in a week on becoming a cancer conqueror. But if some1 could send me 1 of the books, I could do the header thing. Because of Bookshare, somegirls with disabilities are going to have real, independent access to the books they need in order to successfully complete their school work! Howcool is that?! It is thanks to a bunch of blind and sighted people workingtogether! Wish we had a place to jot down these little testimonials. Hey, if you're on Twitter, tweet that to @bookshare! :-) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Grandma Cindy" <popularplace@xxxxxxxxx> To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Friday, March 28, 2008 8:25 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Help, Sighted validators Marilyn, Judy S., and any other sighted voluntees--if you'd like to validate some of the remaining Princess Diary books, please feel free to take them whether or not they say hold for me. They need sighted help because the headings of the diary are in a fancy font and don't scan well or at all. Some did scan. I didn't mention you, Jamie, because you already have so much to do, and I know you prefer to scan. These books are for a group of 6th-grade girls who have to read them and prepare book reports on individual books and then as a group prepare a report on the whole series. They need to get into the collection by May first. Maithe and Anastasia and Shelley have been scanning like mad, and someone else and I have been validating, but we could use a little more help. The books are pretty easy to get from the library because they're very popular. Also, they're cute and funny--reminds us, perhaps, too, of our teenage years and worries. G.Cindy I --- "Shelley L.
