Hi everyone,

There are so many books in the world that I think it's *highly* unlikely that we will
ever have a collection consisting of only publisher quality books. So I
really recommend not worrying about a possible publisher takeover anytime
soon. Volunteers are still incredibly important too Bookshare and likely will remain so for a long time to come.

The idea behind importing any publisher books is to prevent people
from having to scan or validate them. The idea is that most of the books we
import are not already in the collection. Yes, it's likely that we will
import some books already in the collection, but I think this is a rather
small percentage. What's more, aside from the HarperCollins books, we
can't predict which books we will have donated by publishers. So while we
may get a book from some publisher in the next six months, it is still
beneficial for someone to scan and validate it now so that
members can enjoy it in the meantime. Does that make sense?

We also like to have publisher books because they are the best quality
possible. Bookshare considers quality important and I think the members and volunteers do too.

So I encourage you all to please not get too frustrated with the import of
publisher quality books. It is unfortunate that some books that one scans
now may be replaced by a publisher book someday, but I don't think that
makes any book not worth scanning at the moment. Moreover, as I've
mentioned above, since we can't know for sure which publisher books may be
donated to Bookshare in the future, it is still extremely important that we
all work to get as many books into the collection as possible.

I hope this has helped clear up some confusion and ease some anxiety. Both
Bookshare staff and members appreciate all the work our volunteers do and
are thrilled that you are continuing to create such great books.

Best,
Allison

These publisher quality books concern me. John Glass said something to
the
effect that someday they hope to have all publisher quality in the
collection. We have some topnotch submitters and validators, and a lot of
the books in the collection reflect this. I would hate to see books that
deserve their excellent rating replaced.

Allison H was kind enough to send me the list of books
that HarperCollins has donated to bookshare. I gather
that bookshare is working on making them available for
download in BRF, and Allison and some of you kind
people are working to affix short synopses. Then
they'll be added to the collection.

Some already have been added, replacing one book that
I spent time validating, though my synopsis was left
intact. Whether others will replace books already in
the collection, even if they're Excellent, or will be
added along with them so members have a choice as to
what to download, I don't know. I certainly hope not
the former.

Anyway, I plan not to validate any books on the list.
If any of you are thinking of scanning or validating
books published by HarperCollins, you're welcome to
check with me if you don't want to do one of the books
that will be added by the publisher.

Unfortunately, we couldn't wait for the Princess Diary
books to get into the collection from the publisher.
Only Princess in Training remains, and Judy is
validating that. Yay!!
