The person is replying to an email digest of messages. You aren't in digest
mode yourself.
Usually you only need read the top part.

Suddenly I am getting 40 foot long emails and replies in digest
format. Is that because the person replying is replying from a digest
format, or is that because I have been switched to digest format
myself?
