A long time ago someone posted a link to download a text editor that was made for blind people. This was several years ago at the very least. I remember thinking that if it was made for blind people it was made for blind people who were a lot more tech savvy than I was. I couldn't figure out anything about it. I even tried looking at the built in help section and I could not understand a thing about that either. However, I am a self-taught computer user and the learning has been very slow. I am thinking that if I tried that text editor now I might understand it now. But I don't remember its name nor where to get it. I remember that its name sounded like a person's name. If anyone here can figure out what I am talking about then that just might be what you are looking for. I might like to try it again too if only to give myself an achievement test.

That was one of the ones I tried, and NVDA was only reading the first

document is locked for editing by yourself" or some such. I don't know
how to fix it so I can actually edit the document, which I really need
to be able to do for proofreading, obviously. My mom has a copy of
Office XP on a CD. I tried installing that, the computer said it
installed successfully, but when I tried to open the file, I got a
message that said "the feature you are trying to use is on a CD Rom"
which it was, but I thought it had been "successfully installed" on
the computer. At this point, I have no idea what to do except just
release the book and let someone else work on it, which is a shame
because I really wanted to proof this book. Oh well. Unless anyone has
any suggestions, I guess that's what I'll have to do.

Mainly doing spellcheck. I have my old desktop with word 2010, but the
computer is so slow, I despise having to use it.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Free alternatives to the new Microsoft Word
on
Windows 10?

Good Tuesday morning, Bookshare volunteers.

I have this new computer that has Word 2016, and of course, it's the
lovely
new, subscription-based model. Now I can't even use Word to proof a
book
anymore. I can read, but apparently I can't edit. I've tried out a
couple of
different substitute applications, but for some reason NVDA would
only read
the first character of each line, and it treated both applications
this way.
I thought I could use my Braille notetaker as a display and read the
whole
thing with it, but it only displayed whatever NVDA was saying, so I
could
only get the first character of each line on there. I know the file
didn't
get messed up because I can navigate by words with NVDA and it will
say the
words.
They don't come up on my display though. Does anyone know of any
*FREE* applications that work WELL for proofing on Windows 10 that
don't
give screen readers any problems?

On a side note, my old computer works fine; my mother just insisted
that I
needed a newer computer, and I got this one from my grandpa, who has
since
passed away. I would much rather be doing this work on my old
computer,
which has a FREE version of Word 2010. I don't care if it's not the
latest,
greatest version of Word; it worked, and it still works! But now it's
sitting under my piano bench, so I have to work with what's in front
of me.
I'm sorry for venting. I would be extremely grateful for any ideas
you guys
might have. Thanks.

Clarissa
