Hi Clarissa.
Oh boy. That's exactly why I sent the subscription version back. It was awful.
You can still get the stand-alone version of 2016 that works well. Also, if you
have a copy of 2010 somewhere, you should be able to install it. I know it
works with Windows 10 because I have it on my computer when2016 was acting odd
with tables.
I don't know of any good free options.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Free alternatives to the new Microsoft Word on
Windows 10?
Good Tuesday morning, Bookshare volunteers.
I have this new computer that has Word 2016, and of course, it's the lovely
new, subscription-based model. Now I can't even use Word to proof a book
anymore. I can read, but apparently I can't edit. I've tried out a couple of
different substitute applications, but for some reason NVDA would only read the
first character of each line, and it treated both applications this way. I
thought I could use my Braille notetaker as a display and read the whole thing
with it, but it only displayed whatever NVDA was saying, so I could only get
the first character of each line on there. I know the file didn't get messed up
because I can navigate by words with NVDA and it will say the words.
They don't come up on my display though. Does anyone know of any
*FREE* applications that work WELL for proofing on Windows 10 that don't give
screen readers any problems?
On a side note, my old computer works fine; my mother just insisted that I
needed a newer computer, and I got this one from my grandpa, who has since
passed away. I would much rather be doing this work on my old computer, which
has a FREE version of Word 2010. I don't care if it's not the latest, greatest
version of Word; it worked, and it still works! But now it's sitting under my
piano bench, so I have to work with what's in front of me. I'm sorry for
venting. I would be extremely grateful for any ideas you guys might have.
Thanks.
Clarissa
