Hi Folks, Fractions, and thus cookbooks, are infamously problematic technical issues around Bookshare. I wonder how many print disabled chef's dinner parties we have ruined by just a fraction of this or that ingredient being off? The ideal is that someday we will build a converter to render fractions for print to digital smoothly and accurately. The bottleneck is that the DAISY Consortium continues to delay making a decision on what the international standard will be. Until then an automated solution cannot be built. In the meantime the best solution is to tailor your practice to the advice being given in this thread by those who use Braille. I do not consider the hyphen as an alteration of text because the hyphen serves as a sort of ampersand without taking up space. I'm not being dogmatic, just letting you in on how Braille looks if you're writing fractions in what we call "literary" Braille. In mathematical Braille, they would be written differently. I wish I could let you see it, but if I were to write out the way it appears in Braille, it wouldn't make any sense to you. Another Braille reader would know what I was talking about, but I wouldn't wish to overwhelm you. Regards, Kim. ________________________________ From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Valerie Maples Sent: Sunday, June 20, 2010 10:18 PM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Fractions in bookshare files for Braille readers Hi, Kim! I didn't think we were allowed to alter text by inserting hyphens. I personally feel it reads easier with a space between the whole number and fraction and unless mandated, would NEVER take the time to insert hyphens in mixed fractions. So, be forewarned if it is a pet peeve of yours that you will not like my submission after proofreading Bakewise. Hope this helps. Regards, Kim Friedman. P.S.: One of my pet peeves is seeing a mixed fraction (such as 1-1/2 being written 1 1/2. For Braille readers, is the 1 / 2 format better than the symbol 1 over 2 in one individual space (sorry I can't make this symbol in e-mail). Any preference?
