Like I said, with a screen reader putting a space only between the whole number and the fraction can make it unclear whether what is being read is one and a half or eleven halves. A hyphen would work for me at least. That does not adhere strictly to the print copy though, so I am not quite sure it is allowed.

HiI know in Braille it is 1 1/2 buteven with the space I'vehad scanned fractions come up saying 11/2 (eleven half), would putting in a hyphon or dash work?Maureen----- Original Message ----- From: "Roger Loran Bailey" <rogerbailey81@xxxxxxx>To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Sunday, June 20, 2010 11:00 AMSubject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Fractions in bookshare files for Braille readersIn print one and a half is written 1 1/2. There is a space between the whole number and the fraction. When listening to that with a screen reader, though, it is not always apparent that the space is there unless one slows down the screen reader to spell it out. I suppose in a recipe it is not likely that one will come across eleven halves, but other fractions may not be so apparent. That makes me wonder if it would be good to come up with some way to seperate the whole number from the fraction so that a screen reader would read the seperation._ _ _ "Socialism is an attack on poverty." - W. When I see fractions, the slashgoes between the numerator and the denominator without spaces. Hope thishelps. Regards, Kim Friedman.
