Wow! This is different. As a proofreader I'm happy to put footnote numbers as superscripts, though it takes time, or to leave them that way if they come to me that way. I don't know how blind readers will feel about the parentheses or brackets around footnote numbers but as a sighted person I hated to see the number by itself right at the end of the sentence. or, especially after a series of words. It was hard to know if it was a footnote number of a number that was meant to be part of the text.As to where to insert sidebar info when it's necessary, I wouldn't restrict it to between paragraphs on the specific page where it appears in the book. Not stoppping flow to me is paramount. There have been times when I've placed the info at the end of the page, before the page break or even at the top of the next page, i.e., the very beginning of the text on the next page. I wish I could think of examples, but any Shelley's animal encyclopedia volumes, or possibly Johnny's In the Well.Cindy http://www.friendsofbookshare.org/wish_list/wish_list.htm www.lljfm.net/bookshare/home.htm A LIST OF BOOKS CURRENTLY BEING SCANNED IS AVAILABLE AT http://www.friendsofbookshare.org/ www.lljfm.net/bookshare/home.htm --- On Thu, 4/23/09, Pavi Mehta <pavim@xxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote:From: Pavi Mehta <pavim@xxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Footnotes and Sidebars To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Date: Thursday, April 23, 2009, 11:31 AM #yiv461457816 p.MsoNormal {margin-left:48.0pt;} Dear Kathy, Carrie and I have been working to draft guidelines for these sorts of things that are currently not included in the volunteer manual. In several cases these are optional guidelines for the benefit of those volunteers who want to comply with all of Bookshare's standardized approaches. They are not requirements, which is to say that if you follow a different approach your book will not be rejected on account of it. Below is the draft we put together for footnotes, sidebars and superscripts. We’ll be sending out a more complete version with other aspects next week. Please send in any feedback or refinements that you would like us to consider! Warm regards, Pavi Standardized Guidelines for Footnotes, Superscript and Sidebars: Bookshare appreciates the insertion of punctuation (brackets or parentheses) around footnotes but does not require it. Footnotes may be retained as they appear in the scanned copy. Bookshare advocates the retention of superscripts where possible, but in cases where your scanner pushes them onto the line above or omits them entirely, please drop superscripts into the text line. This can be done through a global drop. For more instructions (will include a link to detailed global drop directions) If a sidebar only repeats what is already in the text on that page it can be deleted entirely. If it doesn’t and contains different content then please use your discretion in placing it in between two paragraphs of the same page where you think it least disrupts the flow. However, I have sent several back to the checkout page because I don't know the best way of handling footnotes and sidebars, especially when they come in the middle of sentences, and when there are two or more on the page! Could somebody who has done it and is comfortable with it please send a description of the best way to handle these things? Thank you.
