I have gone to my checked out books page before and clicked the link
labeled RTF and downloaded the original file again. Lately I have been
scanning only and not proofreading, so that could have changed since I last
looked, but at least it has been there.

No, you can't download it any time you want. When you first download it,
the book leaves the checkout page and becomes part of your listings.
There is no link for redownloading it. Therefore, her advice is valid.
