[bksvol-discuss] Re: Finding a copyright

I'd really like to know what to do about that particular problem, because I seem to find a lot of books that just don't have the word copyright in them even though they have the rest of the standard statements found in copyrighted material. The books I have found were certainly legal copyrighted material published in the United States. The books usually came from a library and were not published so long ago that the copyright would no longer apply. This just seems to be something some publishers neglect, and it is really beginning to drive me crazy. No source of book information cares about the copyrights of books and even less who the copyright holder might be. Unless it is in the book it just isn't available. If it is in the book then it is usually available from the copyright office, but then you wouldn't need to look up the information unless the scanner just forgot to scan that page.
I didn't realize that I would have to get someone to check the front matter of each book I pick up to see if it has a standard copyright notice before deciding to scan it. Until recently I naively believed it would always be there.

The only benefit that has come from the trouble I have had is that I can assure everyone that google is definitely not just a meta search engine. It really does look at the entire page. :-) I know this because when you try to search for the word copyright along with a book title the only thing you are likely to find are the copyright dates of the web pages on which the book is being sold. Tracy,

Sorry, but I struck out, too.

I was able to find out that the book was originally published in 1992, the
author's real name is Ruth Glick, and that she wrote it under the pseudonym
Rebecca York.

I wasn't able to find the copyright, though. I checked www.copyright.gov,
and the book does not appear in their online records. I found 3 or 4 by her
with Moon in the name, but not Bayou Moon. I don't know if this means that
it isn't officially copyrighted, or that they just don't have it in their
online records.

I Googled for it and didn't find any copyright information either.

I also checked to see if my library has it, since I'm going there later
today. They don't have it, though.

Maybe someone else can find it in their library and look it up for you.

Gerald

I'm striking out today! I need to find the copyright holder for "Bayou
Moon". ISBN 0-373-22188-6.
I tried Amazon, but I've *never* seen copyright data there, and didn't
today, either. I tried the Library of Congress, but can't get past the
search page. If someone can find the copyright holder for this book, I'd
really appreciate it, and, even more, I'd love to know where you got it,
so I could do it myself.
Thanks.
Tracy
