I was pretty sure I knew in general who it was but I wanted to be sure, so I googled. Here's the first paragraph from the Wikipedia article: "was an American film director who was amongst the Hollywood Ten, a group of blacklisted film industry professionals who served time in prison for being in contempt of Congress during the McCarthy-era 'red scare'." I knew he was a director--famous and excellent--and older generation, so you wouldn't know--but I didn't know he was one of the Hollywood 10. Here's a quoted paragraph from another source:"EDWARD DMYTRYK'S 53 MOVIES reflect the spectrum of the American experience. He tackled prejudice and mass psychology, explored psychopathic crime, human rights issues in wartime, and the Western myth. Through his films, one can see how Americans thought, how we reacted to social and moral issues, and how being such a diverse people has strengthened us as a nation. Dmytryk traveled many dark roads in his own life, and he showed us those labyrinthian paths in his movies." He died at the age of 90. (Be careful what you ask here. I get carried away, something my daughters didn't like but their friends appreciated. Plus, when they were little, they got bored with my explanations and therefore I never got the continuous "Why," "Why..." one answer was enough for them to quit.
