In addition to what Donna has mentioned, I would also look at the scansoft engine included with the K1K. The latest version appears to be quite accurate as well. Both engines have their strengths and weaknesses. The major reason why I do not like to use the Scansoft engine so much is because the Scansoft engine does not do a great job of include proper line gaps all the time. It does not, for example, do a good enough job of keeping blank lines between paragraphs or between headings and paragraphs. Doing this eliminates the occasional quirk that causes Kurzweil (or any scanning software program) to decide that something is in columns and tries to make a table of it. In general I find that eliminating options for the program to decide such as disabling columns and fixing the page orientation, gives a cleaner scan in the end. I use the Fine Reader engine because in my experience it is the most accurate. I own the off-the-shelf FineReader software in addition to Kurzweil, and when practical, it is my preference to use it to do the whole scan. However, lately, I've been using Kurzweil to scan books and selecting the FineReader engine during recognition seems to give me the best results. My advice to anyone who wants to spend time scanning beyond a casual interest, is to play around with all of the settings and see how it effects a test scan of several pages. Getting to know your settings and their impact on a scan is the first big step to being able to submit the best quality scans possible, both for yourself and for BookShare. It comes down to whatever combination works best for you. Happy scanning!
