Good morning everyone. It occurred to me this morning that we have many new volunteers who have joined us over the past year. There are a couple of things that many people here may not know about that could make Bookshare life easier. First of all, on Jakes web site, there are 2 handy pages containing book lists that can make our job here much easier. To find them, from his home page, choose the link that says Bookshare Expansion Initiative. The first of these lists is the reject list where people can let others know about books they reject and the reason for doing so. This lets other people know what's going on and often inspires someone else to do a new scan of the book. Second, there is a rescan list where readers can let everyone know about books that are already in the Bookshare collection that have some significant problems. Many of these are books that are rated as good or fair. If we don't know which books need a better scan, we have to assume that a book in the collection is readable and focus our attention elsewhere.

The other cool feature on Jake's site is a place where we can add books to categories to make them easier to find. For example, Laura Ann has worked to create a category for Christian fiction. Since books about all religion, fiction and nonfiction, are lumped together on the Bookshare site, her category makes it much easier to find Christian fiction when you don't want to wade through Bookshare's hodgepodge. Categories can be about anything, a way of grouping books together. I see other categories for things like cat fiction and one for holistic and natural health books. If volunteers register on Jake's site, which is free, they can create and edit categories and help make books easier to locate when someone is in the mood for a good read about a certain topic. You'll find the link to browse the categories on the Bookshare Expansion Initiative page.

I think it's awesome that Jake has made such a resource for us. If we use it well, we can make the Bookshare collection shine like a jewel gleaming in light. If you don't have the address, it's http://www.jbrownell.com

Happy reading.
