hmm. My suggestion re the diary entries would be to use italics but to indicate 
who wrote what, perhaps by putting the person's name and then a colon before 
the entry, e.g., Denise:  Dear Diary or Cindy: Today was a terrible day

I don't know ow to italicize in gmail, smile

re the page numbers. As long as you don't mix up the location on the same page, 
it's o.k. to have them in different locations on different pages, or so I was 
told when I asked the samequestkon a while back (if I remember correctly )
