I think this issue of sidebars is very troubling. I recently scanned two books which I hoped to submit to Bookshare, but both of them had extensive sidebars which came out randomly on the pages. I even rescanned one of the books "The Bible as Literature", but the sidebars are still somewhat random and I am even less enthusiastic about reading the book for my own information. If anyone has the tips on scanning sidebars I would appreciate them.
It seems like some of these things that are visually useful still confuse scanners.

Thanks, Mayrie. Based on my own failures at scanning books with sidebars, I wonder if the book would come out any better, even if thesubmitter rescans it. When I was on this list a couple of years ago, someone posted some tips for scanning books with sidebars, which I tried to follow.I still ended up with sidebars being split up and scattered on the page. I'm hoping that I can find a print copy of this book, and that the task of fixing the sidebars will turn out to be less overwhelming than I originally thought. I may as well get used to fixing them, since I mostly scan nonfiction, and am likely to keep running into them. G! Either way, I think that deleting the mashed stuff is compromising the text. I'd say reject the book, and tell the submitter that a more careful scan needs to be done. Just my opinion. We can't mess with copyright laws by omitting text. So, I'd say, bite the bullet and reject the scan, asking for a rescan that is more careful to keep text that belongs together together. I've had to do a book with boxes and side bars, and it was definitely a bear to prepare for submission. Not a task for a half-hearted submitter.
