Dear Susan,

The Asterisk is used for footnotes and to indicate new scenes and blank lines. The Square bracket is almost never used in books so it works well to indicate picture captions and notes as it translates well and won't be confused with other punctuation which has other purposes as published in the print text.

Always with love,

Lissi

Why not use the asterisk character?
