Poor choice of words in Number 2.

It should read something more like:

2. If you don't want to change file associations, you can start K1000, hit the File menu and arrow down to Open. Then navigate to the folder where the file is using the left and right arrow keys, then tab over to the list of files in that folder and hit Enter on the file you want to open.

Much better!

Evan

This method for opening an rtf file may not work if Windows file associations are set to open an rtf file in Word or WordPad, which is likely unless the user knowingly changed it.

There are three ways to make sure your rtf files open in K1000:

1. If you always want to open rtf files with K1000, you can change file associations. Use the Context Menu, shift-F10, and hit Enter on Open With. You'll get a list of programs that you can choose from and a check box that you can check if you always want to use this program to open this kind of file. Hopefully, K1000 will be in that list. If it isn't, things get a bit more complicated and I won't bother with that eventuality now.

2. If you don't want to change file associations, and I don't, not for rtf files anyway, you can start K1000, hit the File menu and arrow down to Open. Then navigate to the folder where the file is using the left and right arrow keys and hit Enter on it.

3. This is really just a variation of number 2, but I think it is an important variation. If you're like me, and I know I am, you can make a copy of the file you want to open, and put it into a subfolder in K1000's directory--probably Books, or General, or whichever one you like. Then, start K1000, arrow up or down to the folder you want, if you aren't in it by default, then just tab over to the list of books in the folder.

I use the method of making a copy of the file because then I have an original rtf file that I can retrieve from another folder if something goes wrong with the one I messed with in K1000.

HTH

Hi Linda.

If you aren't familiar with it, Kurzweil has an online manual that is pretty good. You can get to it in two ways. You can press and hold the 0 key on the keypad, and press the enter key on the keypad, then let both keys up. You can also press alt+h and arrow down to "read the manual" or something like that.

The manual is broken into an assortment of bookmarks, like a table of contents. Press control+r to see the table of contents.

Now to your questions.

You can open the .rtf file in Kurzweil just like you do for word. Press control+o to open a file, and point the computer to where you've stored your file, and hit enter on ok.

To get into rank spelling, hit alt+o for tools (t was already taken). and up arrow until you hear "rank spelling". When you hit enter Kurzweil will say something like "kurzweil is finding the misspelled words in your document. This may take some time." It usually takes a few seconds. You are then presented with a list of words that Kurzweil thinks are misspelled. It also gives you a rating--a percentage of correct words to total words. The list is presented in descending order (that is, the word that occurs most is at the top of the list, and the words occurring least are at the bottom). For most books the top words are easy, they are usually names or dialect. As you get closer to the bottom of the list it gets a little touchier. You can decide what to do with each word, ignore the word, replace the word with another word, or you can edit the word, which takes you temporarily out of the dialog, and points you to the first occurrence of the word. You can hit f3 to find the next occurrence of the word or shift+f3 to find the previous occurrence. When you are done, press escape and you are back in the ranked spelling dialogue again.

I really love the ranked spelling tool for proofreading. Like my old pappy used to say, "heck, it's better than sliced bread."

Hope this helps.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] questions about proofreading in Kurzweil

Hi all,

In the rare cases I have validated a book, I have done so in word.
However, from what people on the list are saying, doing so in Kurzweil
is easier in a lot of ways. So:

1. How do you open the RTF one receives when downloading a book from
the checkout page in Kurzweil?

And 2: How does one access the rank spelling in Kurzweil, and how does
one check with Kurzweil to see if the document has errors?

Thanks for any assistance.
Courtney
