Hi Sue,

I think what you're seeing with your quotes are smart quotes. Those are
another thing in the AutoCorrect junk that we generally turn off. I'll
pastesome instructions to keep them from appearing when you type.

As for replacing what you are seeing, which can be helped with find and
replace, because they came to you in your document, here are instructions:
I'm not Judy, so you can tell me to mind my own business and I will.

Copy one of the backward looking quotes to your clip board by sitting your
cursor on it, pressing shift plus right arrow to make sure it's selected,
and then pressing control plus c to copy it to the clipboard
Move to the top of your document by pressing control plus home to make sure
your find and replace action covers the entire document.
Press control plus h to open the find and replace dialogue
In the "find box" paste your opening quote that you copied to your clipboard
by pressing control plus v
In the replace box, type a quotation mark as you usually would.
Tab to "replace all" and hit enter.

Do the same with what you're seeing as a closing quote and save the changes,
and you're done.

Now, here are instructions for turning off automatic insertion of smart
quotes when you type from a document Judy created a couple of years back.
I'm also including the other things in the AutoCorrect section that need to
be turned off so you can do that all at once and be done.

See below my signature, and happy proofreading!

The following steps were taken from the volunteer blog and are suggested
settings for your Word program by Bookshare staff. You will only need to do
this once on your computer, and it will customize your Word program to
change some settings to make it more compatible with proofreading for
Bookshare.

1.

Stop conversion to border lines:

Go to Tools Menu (short cut = alt T),

Click on "Autocorrect Options"

click on tab "AutoFormat As You Type"

Uncheck box labeled "Border Lines"

asterisks (and equal signs, dashes, etc.) will no longer convert themselves
to lines (or borders).

2.

Fix smart quotes:

Go to Tools Menu,

Click on "Autocorrect Options"

Click on tab "AutoFormat"

uncheck "Straight quotes with smart quotes".

Go to Tools Menu,

Click on "Autocorrect Options",

Click on tab "AutoFormat As You Type"

uncheck "Straight quotes with smart quotes".

3.

Fix em dashes:

Go to Tools Menu

Click on "Autocorrect Options"

Click on tab "AutoFormat As You Type"

uncheck "hyphens - - with -".

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Contracted Braille translation

Judy,

If I remember correctly, you are the one who can figure out search strings
to do things globally, and I really really need help here.

I turned on Grade II output Braille so I could check how Jaws 12 handles
things in Braille. Well, my opening and closing quotes look like closing
quotes in Braille, and this should not be. So I think I need to give Word a
cussin' and then see if there is a global replacement solution. If I delete
the opening quote and retype it, it looks like it should in Braille. So am
I nitpicking here, or do the opening and closing quotes really look
different in print as well? When I type them, I use the same key,
apostrophe with the shift. I really hate bringing this up again because I
know it has been addressed several times already.

Thanks for any help.

Sue S.
