Hi everyone. Are any of you looking for help learning to use your scanner? Are you looking for tips to improve the quality of your scans so you don't have to do as much clean up while proofreading? Or are you a proofreader who wants to get a scanner but feel hesitant and a little confused about how to get started? If so, please join us for a chat and presentation from CAVI, the Cisco Academy for the Vision Impaired, to learn about how to get the best results from your scanner and OCR software. It starts at 6 PM Pacific, 7 Mountain, 8 Central, and 9 PM Eastern. Both Mac and PC users are welcome. See below for details. Using a scanner gives people with reading disabilities so much independence and options in our lives. If you're a volunteer for Bookshare, you already know that. (smile) We aren't born with innate scanning skills though, and our first efforts can be a bit messy until we figure things out. Manuals are long, and they don't often explain what to do to fix scanning errors in plain English. I have been a Bookshare volunteer for seven years, and I both submit and proofread books. CAVI has asked me to do a presentation on scanning basics and then to provide more advanced tips for people who are looking for ways to improve their scanning quality. I'll cover principles that apply to all OCR software, so there will be something here for everyone. There will be plenty of time for questions, and there will be a social time after the presentation. You're welcome to stay and make some new friends. Here are the details for when and where the event will take place. Once again, this will all take place Sunday , May 20, at 6:00 PM Pacific, 7:00 Mountain, 8:00 Central, and 9:00 PM Eastern, using TeamTalk. TeamTalk is available on the PC, Mac, and Linux. The server is tt.cucat.org (using default ports), and it doesn't need a password. If you need to test your audio or need help configuring TeamTalk, come to the server a little early, and we'll help you get things going. You can also send a message to cavi-instructors@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or send a Twitter message to @ciscovision or to my personal Twitter address @plumlipstick for more information. We hope to see you there. There will be a full mp3 file of the presentation that you can download if you can't attend the chat tonight. I'll post the link here when it is available. Please share this email with your friends and invite them to join us. Maybe we can get some people interested in volunteering for Bookshare once they know how to scan. -- Monica Willyard Visit my GoodReads book shelf at http://www.goodreads.com/plumlipstick To unsubscribe from this list send a blank Email to bksvol-discuss-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx put the word 'unsubscribe' by itself in the subject line.
