HI Lora, I think you would be happy with the Canon. K1000 version 11 has newer versions of both Finereader and Scansoft. From what I know the Scansoft is the latest and I believe the same for Finereader. I have been doing Christmas shopping online here this week. Have two shopping carts by Tuesday or Wednesday I will purchase. I won't be buying a new scanner until after the beginning of the year, because it's a want not a need, and Christmas is looming. I do think I want something like the 2580, to scan with speed and accuracy. If I had something like that, I'd stop sending all the books I want scanned to Carrie. I'd do them myself. I use OpenBook, but with all I've heard about Kurzweil, I may try to upgrade at the same time. When will Kurzweil 11 come out? How many new recognition engines does it add? -----Original Message----- From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Kaitlyn Sent: Saturday, November 18, 2006 5:03 PM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Buying a Scanner HI Lora, First the Canon DR2080C is a Canon. I haven't been browsing scanners much lately so I assumed that the 2580 is the newer model of my Canon DR2880C. I have not had any real problems with the scanner. When I originally received K1000 9.0 and the scanner it setup fine. Using 9.0 of K1000 there was one glitch with duplex scanning. I needed to run a page through in simplex before I changed it over to duplex mode. I found this glitch to be gone under version 10 of K1000. I just ordered my OpticBook so haven't worked with it yet. I should have it sometime this coming week. From all I have heard on the list there are not any major issues with running multiple scanners. Again the reason for the second scanner is to be able to scan those books that I don't want to chop up. This gives the best of both worlds. Another option for you is to get a scanner with both flat bed and ADF. This will run you into more money which will be up to you. After learning K1000 I found on most books I can get up around a 99.5 to 99.9 plus recognition rating with the Canon. I have also heard from folks like Nick That the OpticBook 3600 runs fine with other scanners installed and has a 99 plus recognition rating. I am looking forward to getting Kurzweil 11 with the new recognition engines which should improve things further. IF you have other questions feel free to call me at 503-777-7155. Is it a model of the Cannon brand? Does it work with K 1000 or whatever number K is on these days? And your OpticBook 3600, Is OpticBook a brand and what kind of software do you use with it. A volunteer with solid computer knowledge told me a computer won't have a melt down if it has two scanners attached to it at the same time. Are both of your scanners hooked up to one computer? Since I've already wasted almost four hundred dollars on a HP scanner my Open Book refuses to speak to, I want to choose a compatible scanner when I try again and when I switch to K...number...which the highest percentage of you seem to know most about. Like the Quantity versus quality discussion, this topic about which scanner works and is liked by its user is cyclical which is a good thing for me because I learn something on every go round, and one of these times when the list is talking scanner, I may actually drum up the nerve to buy one. All of you have been so wonderful about scanning books I am wild to read and validate that I'm not motivated to get a scanner to scan books for Bookshare. I'm very hooked on validating. But, I really really need to be able to scan mail and labels and ads, and important or just plain tempting print stuff that piles up. I hope you'll write and tell us what you get, Lora, and all about how you hook up your new scanner and how you like it. Good luck! Always with love, Lissi ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kaitlyn" <kaitlyn@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, November 18, 2006 5:02 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Buying a Scanner > HI Lora, > > I'll jump in here.
