Brian, As a prolific submitter of kids material I'll take a minute to explain why.
I'm a person of many hobbies each of which I will focus on from time to
time. For instance I also enjoy old time radio programs greatly and have an
extensive collection of public domain material.
Books came before old time radio and other hobbies like web design and
program design. I used to collect Hardy Boys books as well as other titles,
but primarily Hardy Boys. I remember reading some on my CCTV when my vision
was better. I also remember the numerous NLS tapes and how annoyed I'd get
because they wouldn't have anymore when there were two or three times the
number of titles available that they had available. I also believe it or not
in 1999 was scanning books every now and then at the age of 13 using OCR
software offered by my scanner package. Was it error free? Definately not
but you could follow what was going on.
So I've got well over 100 if not close to 200 kids titles. I'm a freshman in
college now and when I began scanning books again this summer naturally I
turned to my piles of books to read. Some I'd read through scanning and some
were read to me and others I had yet to read. Also this summer I saw an
excellent deal on a huge lot of Boxcar Children books that weren't on
BookShare yet, so naturally I picked them up.
It is also important to note that children books are faster and easier to
do. The recent postings you might have seen from me might have something to
do with the fact I'm on winter vacation and have scanned and submitted over
20 books during this time.
I feel that I will for some time be a submitter of kids books because I just
remember that I wanted more from series. And if at the age of 13 I'm
operating a computer and scanner then I could potentially at a younger age
be using a BookShare account to access my favorite books.
Of course I do enjoy older titles. I love John Grisham and have recently read State of Fear by Michael Crichton and am currently listening to Fire Ice by Clive Custler on audiobook. The text of Fire Ice isn't on BookShare but I think my step mom has a copy I might be able to scan...it is proving an interesting read...
Well I've definately strayed off topic a bit. I guess my point is that yes
there might be quite a bit, but looking at the new books list I definately
see a lot of nonkids related material. Hang in there with this semester I've
got going for me, 18 hours, I doubt you'll hear a lot from me <frown> but ah
well then they'll be summer....

I ask, because I am thinking that perhaps to some degree the books thatawefulsubmitted and validated might be prioritized according to the user base. Yes, I know that sometimes it is fun for us adults to read good childrens
lit, and that some kids books are among the best titles in literature, but
it seems as though we have two or three kids books for every other title.
I for one am beginning to feel that all these kids books are crowding out
other adult titles that are languishing waiting for validation.
