Hi Lissi, and Everyone,I am in complete agreement with you, Lissi. The method you describe works, and the books come out complete in the collection. There were reasons that these methods were conceived. There are reasons that we use them. When I use these methods, my books come out complete. I will continue to use them.
There is nothing that irks me more, well, okay, some things, but not Bookshare related things, than doing a lot of hard work to submit as perfect a book as I know how to create and to have that book come out imperfectly once it is in the collection. I have found that the methods that Lissi has described produce books that are missing no text.
Unfortunately, in theory, there are a lot of things that should work, but in practice, fall short of consistent reliability. I prefer tried and true practises, not theoretical ought-to-work rules.

Dear Booksharian Friends,Experience and outcome counts for allot. We've worked carefully to protect page numbers and chapter names and numbers and I think our tried and true methods have been reliably successful. We do know what to do.I'm not suggesting everyone use my methods. We have our own pet procedures. As an avid reader and student, and more than full-time teacher for 27 years, accurate and easy to find page numbers, that correspond with the page numbers, in the print book, in some situations, has been very important to me and my students of all ages.My chosen method when tidying my scans or validating is to place page numbers on the second line from the tops of all pages. That blank line above and below page numbers seems to do wonders for making sure they stay put as they get processed through Bookshare's tools. It is quickest for me to find them when they are at the tops of pages. As I've pointed out before, a sighted reader sees whole pages at a glance including the page numbers no matter where they are placed on pages, so it doesn't inconvenience them to note page numbers at the bottoms, sides, tops, corners, or about anywhere on pages. Braille reading fingers, ears, and words on computer screens don't see page numbers at the bottoms of pages right away. If I need them, I like page numbers to be quick to find. If I don't need them it takes a fraction of a second to ignore them.At any rate, I thought we'd worked it out many times, again and again as we steadily get new members. that we can count on page numbers being there if we use our tried and true formula.new page blank line page number blank line text or new page blank line page number chapter number or name blank line textI'm not sure what the guys are talking about. I know it makes sense in their technical perspectives, and I also know they aren't confusing me.Sandwiching the page numbers and chapter names with blank lines has worked for us, so I feel easy about sticking with it. We get our books with page numbers, chapter names and text in tact.Oh, yes, and I thought we'd reached a consensus to leave a blank line at the bottoms of pages. I validate for several submittors of wonderful scans, most of whom put those blank lines in for me. If they don't, I happily put them in. It's no trouble because it's so automatic.Always with love, Lissi ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jill O'Connell" <jillocon@xxxxxxxxxx> To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, January 12, 2008 1:55 AM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Book without blank lines at top/bottom of pagesYou are telling us to put a blank line at the bottom of the page and Guido is telling us to have the number on the bottom line. I agree with E; we now don't know what to do. Let me try to clarify. The reason why we are asked to put in empty lines at the top and bottom of the page is because of the HTML formatting when the DAISY file is converted from the DAISY file. It was discovered that the lack of page breaks in HTML files force page numbers either at the top or bottom are joined to the text, making it impossible to distinguish page number in HTML files. When putting a blank line at the top or bottom of the file, you will find that the page number is placed on a separate line in an HTML file. So, while it may not be absolutely required to place blank lines at the top or bottom of the page, you are highly encouraged to put them in. If you're adding a blank line at the bottom of the page, and it's appearing at the top of the next page, you should certainly verify that the book has hard page breaks. If you are inadvertently exceeding the number of lines, as set forth by the margin and page length settings, than it would cause the software to issue a soft page break and consequently the next page would be blank if there are hard breaks present. My initial guess would be that you're dealing with soft page breaks and it is just pushing the blank line onto the next page. I am fairly new here and don't yet understand completely how this all works, but I thought that books are supposed to have these blank lines because of something that the stripper does, so I tried inserting them at the top and bottom of each page. However, each time I did this at the bottom of a page, the blank line transferred to the top of the next page. I have tried changing margins, but this makes no difference either. Are these blank lines necessary at the top and bottom of each page, and if so, how can I successfully insert them? This is a really interesting book, and since it came from a publisher, the text is perfect; so I'd hate to accept it as is (without blank lines) and have the stripper eliminate the first and last line on each page.
