I think what you are supposed to strictly adhere to is the actual copyrighted material. That is the actual words, word order and punctuation that the author undoubtedly used. What that does not include is page headers, the hyphens of broken words, the fonts that the publisher added to make the book somehow more attractive or to give it a certain air. It would not include decorative flourishes on some of the letters either. The first letter of a chapter is almost always capitalized because it is the first letter in a sentence and those are standardly capitalized. If it is not then it might not be because of some intent of the author. If the first word or few words of a chapter are capitalized that is just another example of artistic flourishes and has nothing to do with the actual text as the author wrote it. Like I said, I leave it that way just because it is easier to leave it that way, but changing it would not change the intent of the author and capitalization of a few words at the beginning of chapters would not be copyrighted either.

We were originally told to adhere faithfully to the book and so I, and probably others, maintained the capitalized First letter and capitalized beginning letters of the first sentence of the chap[ter. Some times the first letter in a chapter is in very large and
stylized font, more of an image and may not scan properly. In a
case like that it is usually pretty easy to figure out what the
letter is. Right now I am scanning a book that does not have that
first letter problem, but the first few words of a chapter are
capitalized. This is not the actual way the text is written. That
is, I am sure that the author did not capitalize those words in
his original manuscript. It is just a kind of eye candy for the
sighted readers that a print book is intended for. So it is
certainly okay to change those words to standard case. On the
other hand, I don't see why they have to be changed either. In the
book I am scanning my screen reader reads them just like it reads
lower case words, so I am just leaving them like that for the main
reason that it is easier to leave them that way. If the
proofreader chooses to change them that is just fine.

The first few words of a chapter being in capital letters is a
very common
practice. I know when I scan sometimes the first letter of the
first word of
a chapter often ends up on a different line, so that could
have been part of
the problem. I'll let someone else answer the rest.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Book Feedback

Hi, everyone.

I have read through two books by Mercedes Lackey--Exile's
Honor and Exile's
Valor. In going through the text it looks as if there are
chunks of text
missing. Also, the first letter of the first word in the first
sentence of
every chapter seems to be missing, and besides that, the first
three words
in the chapters are in all caps. It honestly looks as if the
books need to
be re-scanned or proofed again. Or something. I'd be happy to
proof them,
but not sure where to start, since I'm not sure what to put in
where stuff
is missing.
