Hi, Just for what it's worth, I was never under the impression that we shouldn't scan bestsellers, or books that might become bestsellers. Although most bestsellers get submitted by Bookshare staff, I've seen bestsellers be submitted by volunteers before Bookshare even ordered the books. That's why I think our best option now is to wait and see what the Bookshare policy will be. Hopefully they can resolve many of these confusing issues for us. -----Original Message----- From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of groups Warford Sent: Saturday, November 10, 2007 12:47 PM To: Bookshare Volunteer List Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Best sellers that aren't making it into the collection Thanks, Lori, You literally took (or wrote) the words right out of my mouth! I too have been trying to stay out of this one for much the same reasons but feel strongly about this issue. Bookshare is a wonderful organization, and I appreciate all the services I receive from them. However, I agree with you, Chris and others who have expressed the opinion that we need to know what their position is on the best sellers. It's my understanding, too, that as a volunteer we are not supposed to scan or validate a book that is a best seller or that looks like it is definitely headed that way. Hopefully we'll get a statement soon, either letting volunteers know that there are some best sellers that for whatever reason can not or are not being done in-house or that Bookshare plans to put these books on the site. If the first scenario is true, some books can not be done in-house, then all we need are the names of the books, and then we can do our thing and help get them out there. I hope no one takes offense at this; I'm just stating an opinion, and I learn from others whose opinions differ from mine. Thanks for reading, Cindy 4 PS Best to your cats! However, I feel somewhat compelled to share my thoughts for whatever they are worth. Speaking in general, I think Chris raises some valid issues. If Power to the People was in fact a bestseller in September, it should be in the collection now or listed on the Bestseller page as "coming soon". It is not. It has been suggested by many people that Chris can put the book on the wish list. That solution means that the book may never be added to the collection unless a volunteer chooses to obtain the book and scan it. That is not supposed to be the fate of bestsellers. Also, it has been suggested that Chris scan the book--also not the fate of bestsellers--and he does not have a scanner. Also, it is my understanding that bestsellers have to be scanned and validated in-house as they need to be perfect; such perfection can sometimes be achieved only by someone who can compare the book with the scanned copy. I think that Bookshare is a wonderful organization made of marvelous, considerate, book-loving, employees, volunteers, and readers. Nevertheless, I think Chris has raised a valid issue which I know is being reviewed by staff.
