Hi, I see where you're coming from and you've got some valid points. I've had books both added to the collection and one I validated, and how they passed through and/or got excellent is beyond me as in one case, there were lots of search and replace, but some text was uninteligible and I had to release it. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Christina" <greensleeves1@xxxxxxxxx>

A BPO or Better Proof Of is a great idea.

The book wouldn't necessarily need to be resubmitted, just proofed again.

I've read several books and, while I was listening to them, I thought something like "Why didn't the validator just ask the submitter to rescan that one page?" Or, just give me ten minutes with this book to do search and replaces and it'll be perfect."

I think, and I could be wrong here, that, when a book quality issue is reported, Bookshare actually gets the book, rescans, and proofs it in-house. All that time and effort might not always be necessary. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they're doing it, but if we can help with some BPO's, why not do so?

Hi, Julia. I completely agree with you, and that is an excellent
question. I've seen "BSO" (Better Scan Of) a few times, only a few times,
but maybe we need a "BPO" (Better Proofread Of) designation?

We can only hope that the members who read a book that got "jiffy proofed" and needs TLC clicks on that "Poor Quality" thing available to them. I think
that's the only chance.

And what about all the books they don't proofread, shouldn't they all be put back to step one so someone who actually reads them can do their job?

Surely there are enough intelligent people on staff who approve books who may notice the same people each proofing say four books a day. Even assuming these folks are doing short books staff really ought to be able to catch this kind of thing easily and we need action here from Pavi, Carrie or whoever on staff can squelch this sloppy proofing.

Well, if one person takes, say an average of twenty minutes per book, then they can turn over their five books in less than two hours.

That's just one person. If several people are doing this, then that could add up to a lot of books per day that get taken and sent up to the admin queue.

And that, of course, assumes that this hypothetical person only does five books per day. If they wanted to, they could turn over quite a few more books than that.

Since they can each only take five books, this still means very few fiction books are on the check in books list Roger.

There are so few books on check in books page these days and so few
of them are fiction. What is going on? So little for a proof reader
to do, sigh!!
