As they say, I feel your pain...

Recently I had two books that I had scanned and someone else proofed that were rejected by the bookshare admin because between the time I submitted them and the time the proffer checked them back in publisher copies were added. I checked very thoroughly for those books before I submitted them because they were relatively recent (around 2010 I think). Well, at least we can all feel proud that it was surely the work of us volunteers that got bookshare such a good reputation that publishers feel it is worthwhile to contribute to. And I'll keep scanning.

*sigh*

By the way, I think most of the time books get a new title when they are bought from one publisher and the new one wants to make it look like they have a new book by that author. Another case is when the publisher didn't like the name the author chose, but when a new edition came out the author was more well known so he or she pushed back to get the title he wanted used.

I am glad that Bookshare has over a half million books now, but it is getting a bit hard to find something to scan. I have a paperback book here with the title The Mind Master by James Gunn. I did a thorough search of the Bookshare collection to make sure that it was not already there. That was after I had searched for a number of other books and did find that Bookshare already had them. Several results came up for the title The Mind Master, but none by James Gunn. Just to be sure I searched for the author James Gunn alone and found a number of books by him, but none with the title The Mind Master. So a few minutes ago I started scanning it. On the title page below the title there was a note that the book had been originally published in hardcover under the title The Dreamers. I thought I had better check on that and, indeed, Bookshare does have a publisher quality copy of The Dreamers. At least I didn't get very far before I had to abort. I wish I had known, though, before I had acquired the book. I am now getting books to scan from PaperbackSwap.com because it is the cheapest source I have with limited mobility, but it is not a completely free source. Alas, I now start searching for another book to scan. I think publishers give different titles to different editions of the same book so that they can sell more books. I am sure that readers of print books feel frustration too when they buy what appears to be a new book by their favorite author only to find that they have already read it and they were fooled by a different title.
