Dear Alyssa, and Booksharian friends,

Alyssa, I look forward to seeing the children's books you'll be scanning, I have been surprised by how charming they are. Proofreaders have a treat in store when your scans reach the check in page.

There are so many people contributing large to Bookshare I can't seem to remember to mention all of them who apply to my topic in one email. At the moment I'm thinking about Jamie Yates. She's the one who really got me started proofreading books for kids. Before she began working 2 jobs she offered kid books for people who needed credits, were just learning proofreading or, as in my case, people who needed a break from long and or difficult books. She's the one who introduced me to that silly Junie B. Jones, and she let me work on the Spiderwick Chronicles with her. Having read the books made going to the movie much more fun.

The first picture descriptions I read were written by Cindy R. Knowing what was in the pictures! What a concept! She set the standard for me.

Always with love,

Lissi

It's funny you should bring this up. I recently received a message from
Bookshare which I happily forwarded to some former teachers of mine. One of
them teaches elementary school-aged kids with vision problems. I hope she
gave some of them the information I sent her since I know it would be of
use! I even volunteered to scan whatever she wants that's not in the
collection. :) I may have some old children's books of mine around here. If
I can find them, I'll gladly add them.

Subject: [bksvol-discuss] April Fools and Easter

Dear Booksharian Friends,

If Carrie is true to form and working 24 hours a day, you may see a read
aloud book for April Fool's Day before the fools have to leave center stage tomorrow night at midnight. It's called, It's April Fool's Day. You won't be
able to miss it. The story is about a little kitten who learns the
difference between amusing pranks and practical jokes that are plain mean.

Evan has scanned about ten Easter books. Most of them are for younger
children, but there is a chapter book that looks cute called The Easter
Bunny that Ate My Sister. I'll proofread it next. The book I'm saving until
last because it has some tricky pages is an Easter Handbook with ideas for
teachers and people who work with kids ages K-3.

The Easter book I proofread first which is waiting to be approved is called
Lilies, Rabbits, and Painted Eggs. I loved this one which can be just as
interesting to adults of any faith as to children. It's so full of diverse
histories of Easter customs that when I finished reading it I could have
happily turned back to page 1 and started over.

I appreciate Evan for scanning these books so much. With their pictures,
irregular margins, changing contrasts and fonts, they are bears to scan. You
can't just optimize and skate right through them. I can see him drawing on
his scientific talents and logical thinking, and his opticon skills as he
tackles books in this specialized category. Now I understand why he'd rather
scan a 350 page novel than a 32 page read-aloud book.

With the piles of kid and teen books that Mayrie scans,, the popular series
like Junie B Jones and High School Musical Anastasia buys and scans, the
picture, holiday and boy books Evan submits and the books from the staff,
what kid wouldn't want to belong to Bookshare!

Always with love,

Lissi
