Hello Marilyn,

Thanks for deciding to volunteer with Bookshare as a validator. You'll find
that, while there are a few ground rules, they are nothing like those to
which you are accustomed. That's good, as ours aren't anything close to the
strict requirements you have experienced in the past. Please take a look at
sections 2.1 and 2.2 of our Volunteer Manual for additional information on
submission and validation. The manual contains other useful information,
including the small number of rules that do need to be followed.

We provide our books in Braille and DAISY formats, so I believe the font
issues should not be of any concern. The text should simply be clean and
reasonably well formatted, in accordance with the actual book as much as
possible. You may choose to reformat charts and tables to make them more
accessible, if you wish.

Since the book has already been submitted by another volunteer, you won't
have a printed copy or a file containing pictures of the pages. You're not
expected to proofread at that level of detail.

I hope I have gotten you started in the right direction. Just do your best
and upload your results. A Bookshare administrator will take a look at the
final outcome and approve or reject the book. If it is approved, then keep
doing things as you are. If rejected, the admin will provide constructive
feedback so that you or another validator may make the needed changes.

All the best,

Darrell

Hi, all. I'm Marilyn, and I downloaded my first book yesterday.
I do proofreading and formatting for another non-profit for the
Blind for some time now, but when I opened the bookshare.org
file, I was surprised.

I'm used to RULES. All text in 18 point APHont, headers in
22 point Cooper black, one blank space between paragraphs,
italics should be bold, one-inch margins all around, headers
but no footers -- lots and lots of rules.

Can someone help me out? What's the first thing you do when
you download a book? Which font do you pick? What point
size? How can you proofread without the original book?
You're supposed to keep your pages the same as the original
book? How do you do that if it just doesn't fit?

I'm a college grad, I'm not as stupid as this msg sounds, but
I need some help, please.

Thanks,
Marilyn
