Dear Carrie, Allison and Booksharian Friends,

In the many Bookshare books I've read on my braille note, no blank lines come
through. Over a year ago, in my effort to indicate blank lines so braille
readers can see them, I began putting a single asterisk on blank lines. The
books I've validated show one asterisk and I know a blank line is meant. I find
knowing a blank line is there is helpful especially between verses in poetry
and in novels, to show there's a new scene.

Don't worry. I'm not saying I put in blank lines where I think they should go.
I only use the asterisk to indicate blank lines that are in the text. At the
beginning of the book I put a note to readers between brackets saying a blank
line is represented by an asterisk. I've been a little lazy about putting in
that note lately, but I'll start doing it again.

Since portable braille devices only show a few words at a time, the book can
seem formless, so I really depend on blank lines to help me notice there's been
a heading or break of any kind.

Always with love,

Lissi

Always with love,

Lissi

I thought I said that multiple blank lines would be removed until there was a
blank line between paragraphs, or add one if there was no blank line between
paragraphs. In any event, I was wrong. I just checked the XML and HTML
versions of a file and the display shows blank lines, but when I highlight the
text, the blank lines are not highlighted. This means that there are no blank
lines between paragraphs, it just looks like it in the display. Claire just
stopped by and said that maybe there are blank lines, they're just not being
highlighted.
What about Victor Reader Soft and other programs like that? Do they
recognize blank lines between paragraphs?

Now more confused than ever, Carrie

  Hi Mayrie,

Actually, I wondered about this before posting this message. I asked Carrie
whether or not the stripper would remove blank lines from inside the texts
and she said it would not. So since the blanks will be retained, I thought
I'd ask folks if they liked the blanks.

I'm glad you brought up this question though, it was the one I had myself.

  Best,
  Allison
