All you need to do is turn on your numeric keypad, then hold down the alt key and enter 0227 on that keypad, not on the main keyboard. There is a way to enter these kinds of characters that is specific to Word, but the above method works in any program.

Kim,

I'm occasionally in touch with the Brazilians working on digital book
accessibility. Let me ask. I suspect that, as long as Word is using proper
ASCII, the answer that Bob gave about using the virtual keyboard is going
to be the right answer.

Hi, Scott, how do I put that tilde you mention over the A? Do I turn on
the thumb keys and write an alt key with a number that represents the A
tilde? I know I have a tilde on the computer keyboard but am unsure how
to make that A tilde look good. Any advice I can get will be
appreciated. I think I have a message about circumflexes using the
Control key and something else. Thanks for the info Scott. You see, if I
were writing Braille, (not the Portuguese Braille, but standard Grade 2
Braille) Any accented letter is marked with a dot 4 in a Braille cell.
For example, if I were writing "puree" (which in French would have an E
accent aigu over the first E), I would write "p-u-r-dot 4-e-e". So also,
if I were writing Sao Paulo in Braille, I'd write "dot 6 (capital letter
sign) s-dot 4-a-o dot 6-p-a-u-l-o". Regards, Kim Friedman.

Kim,

InPortuguese you will most often find the tilde over a before o. For
example, San Franciso in English and Spanish is Sao - with a tilde over
the a - Francisco in Portuguese. Mano is Spanish is mao - with a tilde
over the a - in Portuguese. Circumflex will most often be over an o
occurring as the only vowel in a syllable. It would be very rare to find
umlauts in Portuguese. Even in the Linguistics Department in Brazil we
just ignored the umlaut in the word lingüística .

Hi, Bob, the problem is that I don't know what symbol is used in the
print, so I can't know the appropriate accent mark to use. I don't know

if I should use a circumflex mark on the A, a grave, an acute accent,
or an umlaut. (I'm pretty sure the umlaut isn't what I want.) Regards,
Kim Friedman.

What software/hardware are you using?

If in some way you are using jaws (i.e. jaws with word) then you can
press
insert+4 (that's four on the numbers row) and you will get a list of
characters to choose from.

Press enter on the character that meets your needs.

The three a characters you get are: á Á and æ.

Hope this helps.

p.s. even if you're using a program like kurzweil or openbook to proof
with, there are ways to get these characters into those programs. Just
let us know.

Bob

Hi, I'm proofreading a science fiction book. I'm reading the second
story in the anthology. Part of the story takes place in Brazil.
There's a discussion of Sao Paulo. The advice I need is how to put in
the correct accent mark for the A in Sao Paulo (Paulo doesn't use an
accent mark. I know how to write it in Braille, but I don't know which
ASCII character to use for the A in Sao. Please write me back as I wish

this to look right. Many thanks for the help. Regards, Kim Friedman.
