Hi Charisma,

Thanks for sharing that. We still use a filter to check for certain "naughty"
words but we have likely updated that list since the manual has been updated.
An example of the need for human judgment: many science books come up marked
adult content because of the words used and the number of times those words
appear, but those should very much NOT be marked adult content.

To clarify in regards to your question in the previous email: is it not
specific enough to ask yourself if a thirteen-year-old could buy the book at a
bookstore or check it out of the library? I emphasize COULD, not SHOULD, too.
Is this still leaving it up to someone's discretion too much? I very much
appreciate your input here!

Thanks,

Madeleine

I just found this in section 6.5 B LEGAL INFORMATION
"Adult Content policy <SNIP>Bookshare has developed an adult content filter
that runs all text through a quality assurance (QA) process in which the text
is compared to two lists of trigger words. One list is of terms severe enough
that one instance of that word trips the adult content filter; the other list
requires multiple instances of the term to trip the filter. No matter whether
the filter is tripped or not, the final determination is still made by a
member of the collection development team. We do not allow an algorithm to
trump human judgment when it comes to placing books in the adult content
category.

Are there guidelines for what constitutes "adult content" in the volunteer
handbook? I have not scanned in a long time and am not familiar with the latest
handbook.
I would think it would be impossible to leave this decision up to individual
discretion since people have such varying opinions.

OK. Sorry then. I mean, then think about the words that you hear a
beap in the movies or shows when it is being said. I hope I am not
forced to write some here. I won't and I hope I am not forced. I
mean, I really don't want to and I know not to. So, yeah, think about
the words that won't be writen in the kids' books or like the words or
actions, sometimes that are not in the movies rated excluding minors
such as PG or R or I can't think of more yet. Sorry if I was wrong.
Thank you............
